Coolant in the oil ...

Six months ago I took my car for an oil change (not a Mazda dealership) and the mechanic advised me that there was a lot of gunk in my oil. I also noticed that I had to constantly put coolant in my 8. I did not see any signs of coolant leaking out.

Last month I took my car in for another oil change @ a different location and the mechanic advised me that coolant is leaking into my engine and I should take it to the dealership.

After 7 years and 91k miles later I come to find out that Mazda has extended their engine core warranty to 8 years 100k miles. The reason why is that there's a malfunction on the coolant gaskets on the 2004-2008 Rx8's. They crack which allows the coolant to get into your engine. Pretty soon your engine will seize.

Mazda replaced my engine for free. If you see gunk in your oil and your coolant level is consistently dropping. Take it back to the dealer! Believe it or not if you're in this Rx8 club you probably know more about Rx8's then the mechanic.

Thanks for the post, coolant in the oil has not been a common engine failure mode but the 8 year 100k engine core warranty is well known here. Many of us have had a couple of engines  I got my last one at 96,000 miles. But neither of my failures were due to the coolant seals failing.

Happy rotoring!
