I was having the same problem aswell. Went to the dealer today and said I had a problem with the low coolant light coming on randomly. He said "you need a new bottle, let me see if we have one". Just like that. He pulled my car up on the computer and said that warranty will cover it as long as I don't have over 50k miles. PHEW! I'm at 49,100 :) So I'll be getting that replaced tomorrow. Thanks folks for this thread, if I hadn't read it I probably would have waited a little longer and then it'd be too late.
Do me a favor.............ask them what revision they are taking out, and what revision they are putting in. In my thread we are beginning to try and assemble some data on the various revisions. |
M still is the newest one correct?
lol thats embarrasing if they had to go to n.... |
Yes, "M" is latest, but sometimes revisions don't mean there was an issue driving the uprev. I'm just trying to see what revisions have crapped out................it's possible the fix really occurred a few revision ago?
|
Oh sorry I had already picked the car up when I saw your post so I didn't ask. Apparently now I need a new battery too, hmf..
|
you dont have to ask, you should be able to see the part number just looking in with the hood open.
|
Well I can't check what the old bottle was.
|
where is the sensor I can disconect?????
|
it's on the bottom of the bottle. If you disconnect it make sure to check your water level often.
|
^..........Yeah the sensor is on the bottom of the bottle, but that's not where you want to disconnect it!
The easiest plug is right there at the left of the bottle when you are looking at it. https://www.rx8club.com/attachment.p...2&d=1182664209 Here's my thread on the whole subject: https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-trouble-shooting-95/coolant-bottle-greatest-secrets-revealed-182793/ |
im having the same problem.... light came on weeks ago. I been driving on it...and assuming it is just malfunctioning..... i been watching my temp gauge and it hasn't moved... so my question is.... it is safe for me to drive or is my engine at any danger?
also... i am thinking about either bringing in to the dealer.....and asking them to either A.) fix it. or B.) turn off the sensor. How much will either option cost me? I am about 1300 miles off my warrenty. Thanks guys! |
make sure to check the coolant level, since the sensor on the dash is near useless.

Engine Coolant Leaking
Hi everyone. My engine coolant light went on during highway driving last week, and the coolant level was really was low, so I added more. I also had regular maintenance done on the car a couple days after that. A few days later, the light went on and off again on the same highway stretch. I checked the level, and the coolant was very low again. I brought it back to service. The mechanic can't find any leaks, but there is definitely something wrong because my coolant is disappearing. I'm having the tank with the sensor & hose replaced. Hopefully this will resolve the issue. I think this is one instance where the sensor was definitely picking up on something.

So basically if it is an all new tank, this is not the issue...if you are seeing coolant here after the ALL new Tank then engine is gone IMO. Has your Cooling System been Pressure Tested by your mechanic, sometimes this will show up small or fine external leaks. If you have NO EXTERNAL leaks around the engine, water pump or thermostat area, the next check (which your mechanic may not have look at) is to look inside under the middle side of dash, can you smell coolant?, is carpet wet?, or is there a leak at the heater hoses??. If none of these show anything up, I am sad to say that it really can only be Rotor Housing Coolant Seals leaking INTERNALLY and depending on the size you have coolant going out the exhaust. Small fine leaks can sometimes show NO exhaust smoke, large leaks will. But if it is at the Large stage, Usually the car is very hard to start., or if it does start it shakes and rattles a little until it has blown off/out engine coolant. Does not look good...sorry.. How many Miles?, what Year?, Auto or Manual? |
Response
Hi guys, thank you for your suggestions. @ ASH8: There is no coolant coming out of the exhaust, and no smoke. No leaks inside. It is an auto, 2007 with 45,150 miles on it. It has been super-reliable up to this point. I always warm it up, rev the engine, and never shut it off cold. Even the mechanic there at Mazda has noted that I take very good care of the engine. I just bought it off the lease in April since I've been so happy with it. The car is staying at Mazda until the new tank comes in. I will call and ask them to test the pressure. They were just going to give me my car back after seeing no visible leaks. But I had to emphasize that the coolant is leaking somewhere, and replacing the tank is the only solution they gave.

thanx mazurfer for posting the disconnect diagram!
|
Same here, coolant light on when I drive highway speed, otherwise nothing.
|
Keld30...................assuming your coolant level is okay, then that's a classic bad sensor issue!

JUST Remember, Coolant Loss and Dash Light CAN be two separate issues when it comes to these Coolant Bottles/Tanks. Most Coolant Bottles have been renewed because the internal Coolant Level Sensor is defective, Not Losing Coolant. Losing Coolant is ANOTHER Issue, there are not that many guys who have had tanks replaced because they are losing coolant, but, like I said your Tanks Pressure Cap may have been worn/defective.. I am going to sit on the fence on this one until you have had new tank put in and used your car for a while...;) GOOD Luck! |
Same here and THANK YOU to all of you incredibly useful, helpful people on this forum who have posted tips and advice.
My '04 has started having the coolant issue just like the rest of you. Only comes on intermittently when I'm revving really high on the freeway and then goes away; coolant level is always fine when I check it and doesn't appear to be leaking. I'm long past warranty and don't want to lose more dollars if this isn't something that's going to be a longer-term problem. I'll just have to continually check my coolant level but I do that for my oil level anyway so no biggie.

I would like to add myself to the Radiator Light On Club (R-LOC's). I would like to thank all of you that had provided insight to this problem.
Anyway living in Palm Springs area my RX-8 always had the water gauge needle 2 lines under the half way mark. I was very impressed and pleased because during summer it gets 120 out here and no problems. It's a '06 and I have so far 60K+ miles on the car, but lately the radiator light comes on at high speeds (75-90mph) or high revs. I change the thermostat but still, nothing. Then i decided to look here. Maybe next time I will look sooner. Thanks again |
Funny mine only comes on (allong with the TPS light) every summer when I have my rack on. I know its nuts to put a rack on an RX-8, but that way I get to take her with me on vacation at the lake. Once the rack comes off, the light goes off till the next summer...wierd. Since its an idiot light I'm not to worried. When I have time I might jiggle it or ask the dealer about it. The fliud (all fluids) is checked regularly and the bottle is full.

my prob is it comes on when i cold start but only stay on for like 20 r 30 seconds so idk ima try adding coolant ne other advice
