My car is currently being worked on for the same concern with the purge solenoid. The service manager could not really explain to my satisfaction exactly what was going on with the car and how this valve operated.

I would really appreciate it if somebody could explain to me the location, function and operation of this valve. Thanks in advance.

I have no idea! So I took the speed 6 out for a few spins, and after realizing I'd be driving in Seattle traffic I opted for a pre-owned Audi A4 2.0T Quattro. Solid, quality, pulls 0.86gs. True not as sporty as the 8 but its bye bye Mazda for me now....

I have the same prob as everyone else. I have a 04 6MT 8 and the CEL is ALWAYS on. It has been to the shop countless times for this and they always say its the gas cap. They replaced it and the purge valve of the course of numerous visits. The CEL was light when i took it in for the new recall and they said that the reflash would fix that problem. They said the parameters for the EVAP system were to tight and that is what was causing the CEL. Well guess what, after the reflash the damn thing came on again and of course it is another EVAP code for a small leak. The time I took the car to the dealer before the recall they said "Oh, we're really going to fix it this time!" What the hell is that about? I have had the cat replaced twice already, two sets of plugs, and some other things that I cant think of off the top of my head. This is absolutely out of control. And no matter how many drive cycles or refills of gas and making SURE the damn cap is tight the light is ALWAYS there. My car has 68,000 miles on it (all highway) and I am always at the dealer and having to get a rental car that I cant take out of state (traveling for business) so I have to take my girls car while she takes my rental. This is just getting way too out of control.

Sorry, just had to vent some steam.

You can buy a code reader that plugs into your laptop and read and the CEL code, for about $140. It's a lot better that going back to the dealer. And, if you need to go back, you'll already know what the CEL is.

Try this: http://www.obdscan.net/ (not an endorsement)

Hey guys, I may be full of it but honeslty, the few times my light has come on was when I let my mom use my car and she put regular gas in it... Every time I get it back form her the light comes on until I fill it back up with super, otherwise my light has never come on. I also dont let her drive my car anymore.

Your gas cap probably was not installed tightly enough or it is faulty. Do a search for gas cap and you will see why I say that. Make sure you/her screw the cap on and hear a couple of clicks. If you still get the light, have the dealer check it out. There have been numerous reports of faulty gas caps causing a CEL.

Lower grades of gas will not directly cause a CEL. Many owners run 87 octane with no problems, other than perhaps a slight drop in performance.

Poor mom. lol.

When I had put 87 straight from 93 in my car, I got a blinking cel a few times at high rpms. I am back on 93 only and no cel.
