cold start slight misfire

On a cold start my car has a slight misfire, while driving no misfire at all. Starting it through out the day after the cold start no misfire.

What do you guys think this could be? I know it's not the coils because if the coils were bad then it would misfire randomly or when im driving.

Just changed my spark plugs yesterday.

Thanks in advance...

anyone?

I think mine has the same too.

Happened after changing the plugs and wires... Wires are on tight...

Got no clue...

anyone have any info on this?

I can't find any other topics about this....

I changed the wires for Racing Beat ones, new NGK sparks, and the ECU was flashed.

The car starts fine, but just before the engine comes to life I can hear 1 or 2 clicking type of sounds.

Compression is fine and the wires are securely attached to the plugs.

Our cars are pig rich.

You are experiencing plugs with too much fuel.

Normal.

Faxie 09-03-2010 08:57 PM

Then why didn't it happen before? I've replaced my coils a year ago, replaced the plugs 2 times, new battery, and I have never experienced that sound before...

Razz1 09-03-2010 09:01 PM

Because the plugs slowly build up excess fuel and carbon and become fouled.

Faxie 09-03-2010 09:52 PM

It started with brand new plugs.

Car runs fine btw. Smooth idle, WOT to redline is smooth as well, no power loss.... only the cold starts are strange...

Clean the MAF. Link in the $100 thread below. You did not say what year, but if you changed the plugs, it is old enough to do the MAF. You will be surprised the difference it can make if it is dirty.

I clean the MAF and throttle body on a regular basis

Hm, That is usually the easy one.

More data?

Year?

Description of misfire. Is it one pop every second or so for a few seconds? Does the car shake or is it more something you hear?

Is the clicking sound a chirping sound, like someone stepped on a small bird? Do you know if the coils were the new "B" coils, or even better, BHR?

Faxie 09-04-2010 12:51 PM

2005 Shinka. The car starts normal, but just before the engine starts you can hear one or two clicks. (click - click - vroom :P ) I'm not sure it's a misfire. Idle is butter smooth, car runs great, standard Mazda coils.

The clicks aren't chirping sounds. Just, well, clicks.... and you never hear them again, only on the cold start.

I think i'm gonna detach the Racing Beat wires and check them.... maybe that's the problem...

04Green 09-04-2010 02:05 PM

any way the clicks are and arcing sound? Like the spark is going someplace else than the plug?

VashGS 09-04-2010 05:59 PM

Misfire? You sure it's not a blown motor mount. The coils have over 30,000 miles or 6 years? Replace them.

Faxie 09-04-2010 07:23 PM

Explain how a bad motor mount is gonna cause misfires? Replaced the mounts 2 weeks ago as it happens, because of a slightly bad idle.

The current set of coils have 10k miles on them.

One more time: At first the car started just fine. Then the ECU was flashed to the latest version, plugs were replaced, wires replaced with RB ones. All other factors (gas, climate) stay the same. And then all of a sudden the clicks started.

It would seem strange to me that the plugs or wires are bad, because the car runs great. Idles great, revs great, no power loss, no pinging, smooth acceleration, good response.

It's just the engine start that annoys me. There must be some kind of explanation for it.

Faxie 09-04-2010 07:30 PM

Could it be a click from the starter by any chance? Like it disengages incorrectly or something....

Faxie 09-06-2010 03:30 PM

Update:

I have recorded the sound with my phone. Low volume, but you can clearly hear the clicks.

Anyone?

rblackx8 09-10-2010 06:22 AM

Sounds like a starter isn't coming off the flywheel completely.

rblackx8 09-10-2010 06:23 AM

Well not coming off but maybe still tryin to turn it.

Faxie 09-10-2010 01:09 PM

Ok, i'll check that out. But then why would it work just fine when the car is still warm?
