Clutch weakness

I see it this way...
The RX-8 clutch is simply not designed to take the loads created by a high revving rotary. I've never replaced a clutch in ANY car I have ever owned, but here I am with a completely exploded clutch at less than 15k miles.

Take a look...

The real question is, did the pressure plate separate first, then cause the disc to tank or was it the other way around? Who knows...but the bottom line is this shouldn't happen in a new car - no matter how hard it was driven.

I've never done high RPM burn outs or any harsh driving...this is a case of cheap parts.

The next step is to work w/ MNAO to get some assistance with this repair. Maybe if they would just help with the labor or SOMETHING. I am severely disappointed in Mazda (only about the RX-8).

I just bought a 2006 MX-5 and have owned many Mazdas...I hope it's limited to the RX-8. This may cause a complete rethink of keeping the RX-8 - the only question is WHAT would I replace it with???

I ordered the ACT clutch kit from RX7store...might as well put something a little more stout in there. My faith in the stock parts is pretty low.

furthermore...

Note: this damage took place on the highway at a constant rate of speed (about 50mph) and exploded upon trying to clutch and downshift in rush hour traffic. Just to clarify...it was not during a take off or any sort of hard driving...I was just riding along and tried to slow down for traffic.

Have to wait til we get the car back...I "think" it was about Feb 2004. I bought the car in April 2004.

Good news. I spoke with the local service manager and he contacted the regional manager. Due to my long history of buying cars with this dealer and the fact that I am meticulous about my car care...they agreed to cover the loss of the exploding clutch. I am very pleased with the outcome.

I'm not going to bother pressing for more...I paid for an upgraded disc/pressure plate - the rest is covered by Mazda.

:D

When I get the car back, I'll get you the build month/year.
;)

"Different" meaning heavier? How much?
Or does it grab harder? How would you describe the difference?

6mm 09-22-2005 11:17 AM

The ACT clutch is heavier and the pedal engages more quickly...takes some getting used to. It's a great clutch I'm sure, but it simply feels less smooth in the pedal. It's as if you can feel the springs in the disc and the throw out bearing mechanicals through the foot pedal.

Tamas 09-22-2005 11:49 AM

OK... that means ACT is out for me. I don't like if the clutch feels that way.
Thanks for the description.
