Check Engine P2259 Confusion
 
Hey guys, so over the last week I've been having some issues. My friend drives an 05 RX8, and about a week ago her check engine light came on. She went to the dealer, they did a diagnostic, and gave her the following description on a piece of paper:

"DIAG CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON RETRIEVE CODE FOUND P2259
SHUTTER VALVE SOLENOID INOP RECOMMEND REPLACING VALVES
AND SECONDARY SHUTTER VALVE PER TSB

RECOMMENDATIONS:
SHUTTER VALVES, EFI DECARB, ENGINE AND CABIN AIR FILTERS"

For all of this they wanted to charge $2224.00, so she contacted me and I told her to hold off. I took the car back home, bought and replaced the engine and cabin filters, seafoam for the efi decarb, and got new motor oil/filter. Then together with my brother I took apart the engine bay to get to the Air solenoid and the two below them. We built a 12V circuit to test and see if each solenoid was working properly when electricity was applied, and all 3 worked perfectly. Puzzled (the dealer said the solenoid wasn't working), we cleaned the connectors for the solenoids, put it back together, and when we started it up the engine light was still on, but it ran great. A day later the light went off, and a day after that it came back on. Then it went off again 2 days later, and it just came back on today. I didn't think that the valves or SSV would need to be replaced because it's running well and it's "per TSB" but now I'm not so sure.



Does anyone have any input on what this might be? I don't have a tester to see if it's throwing the same P2259 code as before, but I feel like because it's running great, and it seems to turn on and off, the problem seems to be something minor. I'd hate to have to take it to the dealer again because the owner already paid 112.00 for the diagnostic once. Any ideas/recommendations would be greatly appreciated

could be a completley unrelated code. you cant move forward until you know what it is. find someone in your area with acode reader or try a parts store. they usually have one they will let you use to check codes

Yeah I'm thinking the same thing. My brother actually works at an auto store and he's very very good with repairs etc. But even he isn't allowed to use the code reader there. I do know one person with one who specializes in rotaries as well, but it seems like he fell of the face of the earth, so if I don't get a response from him by today I'm going to probably take it to the dealer for the diagnostic again

Also is the dealer's recommendation of replacing the SSV, valves etc, necessary for P2259 codes generally? While I worked on the car I was reading up on other people's experiences with the code here, but I didn't see people discussing replacing those valves really
