Check Engine Light on, code not readable

Hi guys,

07 Automatic Rx-8

Got a slight problem. I went to get some cosmetic work done today on the car and I'm fairly certain the engine was flooded at some point during the appointment since they had to move it in and out. They mentioned they had to crank it a few times and on the third try it turned over. They then proceeded to shut it off again after they got it out of the bay.

Now once I got the car again it turned over on the first try after 5 seconds or so. Right after it turns on the CEL pops up. They mention they didn't see that on when they pulled it out and that's when I was told about the extra cranks etc, hence why I thought they flooded it.

At home I plug my reader into it to read the code and it keeps giving me an error 8888 code basically saying the reader can't pull a code and it might be because the pins are messed up or the fuse for the port is blown etc.

The searches I've done here have lead to a number of potential problems from fried cat due to flooding, bad electrical system due to a weak battery, fouled sparkies etc.

It didn't seem like there was any difference in driving on the way back home. Does anyone have any ideas on how to go from here? Take it to the dealership? Wait for a few more drives to see if it clear on its own?

EDIT: Oh a couple of weeks back the battery drained because a light was left on over night. Had to get a jump to start it up but it ran fine with no code until this happened. Not sure if that makes a difference to you guys

Thanks

I have not. It has been used just fine on other cars though if that makes a difference.

Make and model of the reader:
Actron CP9035

it does. The Actron CP9035 is not a CAN capable scan tool. It will not be useable for an RX-8 or any OBDII+CAN vehicle. OBDii +Can was being used by Mazda and others as early as the 2003 US MY and it was mandated for anything 2008 and newer

I'll pop into the nearby Parts Source and see if they have a newer model then or have them plug me in if they can and just pull the code to report here.

CEL just disappeared this morning went I went to drive over. Drove around for 20 minutes or so taking her through all the paces and nothing.

Hopefully all is well.
