Check Engine Light
 

Okayyyyy so I was on the freeway driving to a local Petco when all of a sudden my check engine light flashed 5-6 times. Accelartion felt weak and I couldn't Rev past 6k. Anyone ever experience this? Something I should be worried about? Car is at the dealer atm :icon_no2:

Oh man, so this is what I was told. Need new Ignition Coils, wires and spark plugs. Dealer can fix it for about $950. :squint:

Or you could do it yourself for around half that price with the help of this forum. Research on where you can get sparkplugs at. (sparkplugs.com) and the coils etc. Lots of venders around here that are so much cheaper than dealerships. YES you can do this yourself.

do NOT let the dealership do it.

Sparkplugs = $80 from Charles R. Hill (forum Vendor)
Ignition Coils = $110 (or so) from www.onlinemazdaparts.com
Wires = less then $100, I suggest Racing Beat wires.

2 hours of work and you're done.
There are Do It Yourself threads on how to do this.

All you need is a 10mm socket wrench to change out the coils. The spark plugs can be a little bit trickier. The take a standard spark plug socket, but getting to them can be difficult. I used a box end wrench to get them started.

So I reviewed a few things online, I have decided to buy the racing beat ignition wires. The Ignition Coils are covered through an extended warranty I bought with the car so that's a relief and as far as the spark plugs... I'm undecided. I'm tempted to try aftermarket but seems like OEM one's are the way to go. Any idea's on which spark plugs I should get? I'm tempted to try the Pulstar spark plugs...

I think the consesus is stick with the OEM ones.

get OEM, they don't cost that much.

Go with the OEM!! STOCK PLUGS...I have tried just about every plug out there in my over 500k+ Rotary driving.

Another question if anyone is still reading this thread. :squint: I was looking at the paperwork I got from my dealership and in the paperwork it just says "Perform Electronic Engine Diagnosis, test indicates an engine misfire due to faulty ignition coils." After reading this, im debating wether or not its true that I need to replace my coils, plugs and wires all at the same time? I've already bought some plugs and the coils im getting under extended warranty, but should I really bother with new ignition wires?

If it was me, I probably would do them all just to be safe. I'd rather have the peace of mind that Everything was replaced and new vs something may still fail and leave me stranded.

Well I finally got all 3 parts replace, 1 day later my CEL comes back but only when I go past 6k RPM. After a few more minutes the CEL never went away.:banghead: I read a few other posts about this similar problem, seems like I might need a new Engine. I don't feel much power above 5k RPM and my car has been making odd noises ever since. Any thoughts on this? My car is back at the dealership as I type this.

That's tough to say. If you have a CEL, the dealership should be able to read the code and tell you exactly what it means. The no power above 5K RPM's may be a clogged cat. Keep us posted.

My car is an 04 BB GT MT with about 24,200miles on it, this might help figure out what my problem is. Hoping its not my engine :icon_no2:

This actually might be possible, I've noticed my car's a lot quieter then it used to be. Thought something was wrong with my intake when I got it back, I guess i'll see what they say.

If it is your engine you should be able to get the engine replaced and covered under the 100,000K warrenty.

I think at 24k miles, I already had 3 cats replaced on my car. I agree with quazmosis, it sounds like the cat is clogged. Also, check the intake for oil.

Hoping the dealership can do this since they have the car atm. Just a little awkward, car seemed fine for 1 day and then it all went downhill again. :icon_no2:

Actually with the low miles he has on it he should be able to get repaired under the original drivetrain warranty.

1st time I went in they said "Found random Misifre and Misfire in cylinder #2...Found all ignition coils to be Arching" Had all Ignition coils replaced along with the wires and spark plugs. Lets see what they tell me now, gonna give them a call soon. :mad:

Hey man, I don't want you to get more upset but I have had ongoing ignition problems for as long as I've had this latest motor...30000 miles now. Dealer kept swapping the plugs, wires, and coils about every 6-8k miles under parts warrantry before they decided that my PCM needed to be replaced. Well, within a week of replacing the PCM my misfires were back...I get the occasional high speed misfire but it generally misfires just idling. Only thing I can think of now is replacing the crank angle sensor...that's the only thing I can come up with. I was thinking since they swapped all the parts over from the other motor that the sensor just went bad and threw the timing off a bit. Problem is it's 165 bucks from Mazda and the dealer won't cover mine because I'm way out of power train warranty. I told them they can just keep throwing plugs and coils at it until they decide to save themselves some money and just replace the sensor for a 1/4 of the price.

My guess is your cat or your engine is toast. No hi-flow would probably be a bad cat.
