Chatter noise on hard right turns on throttle

Ok so I searched a ton, looked under car, brainstormed and couldn't find anything wrong/loose/out of place. I'm stuck.

Problem is that on hard right turns only, while on throttle, there is a loud metal-chatter type noise, from what I think is coming from the rear. I can't figure out what is might be. It doesn't seem to be something that rotational, doesn't sound like the noise is caused by rotation, more like a random vibrating/rubbing noise. I can't help but think LSD.

My car has only 26k easy driven miles on her
Mods are in sig
only on right turns, nothing on left turns

Any one have any other ideas?

fairly common. my car actually did it when I bought it. it's more than likely the differential. check out Mazdatrix for the Friction Modifier additive. Change out your diff fluid and add that additive and you are good to go.

well I'll be putting in Redline diff fluid which claims to have friction modifier in it...We'll see.
Thanks

Changed my diff fluid to redline and still have the noise. Ive been under the car and cant think of anything that would rub or move on a hard right turn that would cause that noise. Anyone else dealt with this?

What redline did you use?

Thanks, but ive had the wheels off twice and torqued down properly since Ive had the car and the problem hasn't gone away.

My noise comes from the rear and only when the car is under a good amount of cornering force and on-throttle.

I used redline 75w90 gear oil.

I would check for a bad wheel bearing. And also what do you consider "torqued down properly"?

24k easy miles and bad wheel bearing, I really hope not. Not to mention there isnt the tell-tale sounds of a bad wheel bearing.

Wheels are gradually torqued to 80 lb-ft, star pattern. Not sure what I could be missing.

It's a frustrating problem to hear this nasty grinding only under a very small set of circumstances and not figure it out. Any help from where I'm at now is appreciated.

^^ Yeah the recommendation by Mazda is around 108 ft/lbs. Sounds like that could definitely be an issue.

Do you read the TSB I posted?

Nope but I either way I torqued down to 110 ft-lb and didn't make any difference. I'll have to pull the wheels and do some sanding based off what I read. :suspect:

I think that's more relevant for the front rotors rather than the rear. I have the same issue but it goes away when the drivetrain is warm - gonna try changing the diff oil to see what happens.

Troubleshooting. It could be a few things, you just have to take it step by step.

I'm just concerned because I'm going to the track this week and dont want something to break or make it worse. .

So don't go to the track. It makes no sense to go run if you have a known issue.

*I created this thread to find out what is causing the sound. As of now the only 2 possible causes brought up are LSD, which changing diff fluid did nothing for.
*The second possible cause is a wheel to brake mating problem. If that's the issue, then I don't foresee it becoming a big problem, so Ill fix it after the track.
*I am trying to get people's experience here since I've only had the car a few months, to see if there has ever been any other cause or solution to this. The same way the wheel torque TSB was revealed 6 posts in, I'm sure someone else on here has dealt with the problem.

I really appreciate you linking the TSB

Going to the track with a possibly serious unknown issue is just retarded. Unless of course you enjoy making a small problem into a big problem.

Have you searched for a similar problem and found anything relevant? This forum has been around more than ten years, so if it was a problem for anyone else there would be a thread on it and likely a fix. So IF you have searched and not found anything then this problem is probably something you just have to troubleshoot and figure out yourself.

And this type of problem care rarely be fixed with advice from the internet. You need to get into it and figure it out. And if you can't figure it out then take take it to someone who can.

dannobre 10-29-2014 04:03 PM

I agree with 9K...if this issue is anything serious...going to the track with it could result in a catastrophic failure and end up with you destroying your car...yourself...or someone else

Any trackday that doesn't do tech...or make you fill out a form that says there are no problems with your car before you run isn't doing there job

And if you crash and hurt someone else...and someone finds this thread you will likely be in serious legal problems as well

As for other possible problems.....

LSD
CV joints in axle
wheel bearing
brake pad/caliper problem
wheel rub
backing plate rubbing

Best option is to take it someplace where you can jack it up so the wheels are off the ground and run it like that to see if you hear any noises...

archwisp 10-29-2014 04:29 PM

I agree with 9K and dannobre: stay off the track till you get it sorted. These guys have been around a while. Also, while you're trying to solicit free troubleshooting help, I'd recommend you hold the attitude.

First off, "a loud metal-chatter type noise" is a pretty vague description for us trying to help you over the Internet. We've all heard all kinds of metal chatter noises from our cars.

Given that you seem to be hearing it from the rear during hard right turns, I would recommend that you focus your attention on the REAR LEFT side of the car as that's the side that's taking the punishment during those turns.

There are a LOT of links down there. Make sure you check every bolt and fitting. Also, check the ones in the trunk behind the trim. Once you done that, there is the possibility of a failing drive shaft joint or a more serious problem in your diff that simply changing fluid won't solve.

Edit: It could also be a loose tail light.

Good luck.
