CEL Secondary Air Injection System

Hey guys. I had a CEL thrown with "Secondary Air Injection System" as the culprit.

Now, I believe it is infact my air pump considering it sounds like this video posted on youtube =P http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPhX638aNLU

This is what my pump sounded/sounds like. I'm not sure if it even comes on at all anymore(might fully be dead) and considering the temperature's been flucutating between 30 and 45(north east). I cleared the code, and it came on a couple days later.

I also put in some BJ's gas on the way home from school (still 93) but the pump has sounded like this beforehand in the cold. But I'm not ruling this out as a possibility.

I've tried searching google and couldn't find one of these pumps. Is it possible to fix or buy one?

Someone posted her on how to actually replace just the electric motor that goes in the pump. they found the model number and manufacturer but you would have to search for it. Or I am sure you could find one used.

That's interesting. I'm checking Mazmart and Rosenthal Mazda right now and don't see the piece, unless it's called something other than an Air Pump.

I mean, whatever gets me back on the road so my cat doesn't clog, I wouldn't mind either fixing it or getting another one. Would you know where to buy a new or used one?

I'm also having trouble searching the forums for that post. Maybe it's a really old post or something.

OnlineMazdaParts.com has it for $378.42
P/N N3H11381XD

I suggest getting on the buy/sale section and see if anyone is selling one.
People running mid-pipes don't need the air pump and some take theirs off.

This part is covered under the EPA emissions warranty until 80k. How many miles do you have?

This is the post with the part numbers to actually fix the pump.

Wow.....................good job guys!
Jon, what do you think that is.......a bearing noise?????
OP.........that sounds prettty ugly, I'm sure it got your attention! Yikes!

9krpmrx8 12-29-2009 11:28 AM

Yeah, I researched this before a while back because I am getting the same CEL and noises but I no longer have a cat so it's not really an issue for me. i am actually looking into to removing it all together.

OP, check it

Yes it did catch my attention... I actually ran about 100 feet away from the car when I started it and heard it =p Haven't been that scared in my life.

Wow you guys are awesome, you found everything! The car has about 44k miles, so it's well under the 80k warranty. I thought I read somewhere the air pump was under a 24k miles warranty, but if it's under the 80k I'm going to schedule an appt right away

Just print out the text from the EPA information and take it with you in case they try and give you an BS.

Well, if you need one, I have a stock air pump out of my 2005 sitting in a box in my room. It has 33k stock miles on it. Good luck with the dealer.

BigBlueShock 12-29-2009 11:37 AM

Is it 24k miles for the air pump? That's what I read at first, considering it's not a major emissions part.

9krpmrx8 12-29-2009 11:42 AM

Yeah but you are covered under the 50k bumper to bumper.

BigBlueShock 12-29-2009 11:46 AM

I failed to mention, it's a 2004 =/ I'm sure that 50k bumper to bumper was only a 2, 3, or 5 year plan. Unless it was extended or some sort

i know it's been a while but I was just wondering if you ever got it replaced.
if anyone is selling theirs, about how much are you guys letting them go for?
thanks, I've had this noise for about a week now. no CEL yet and i have 79,400 miles so i might be able to make it for the free replacement.

I bought my 8 used and with pretty much no extra warranties. Is this a warranty that goes beyond that? Like, somethin they'd be required to fix on ANY Mazda?
