Car missing badly and backfiring since I added oil
 

Right I'm a new RX8 owner it's the 2006 model 2.6 I added oil about 5 days ago and the and the car starting playing up, it's misfires badly, with loads of loud bangs as it backfires, before this car ran smoothly.

Oil was carlube 10w30 mineral engine oil that the shop recommended (worrying thing this was he first tried to tell me I needed synthetic oil).

Any help pls I have the car booked in Monday for a service, new plugs, oil filter, oil etc.

The oil didn't do it ;)....maybe check that you didn't disconnect something by accident ( like a hose or wire connector)

Checked everything, can't not see anything that's lose, was careful when oiling, should add the car smokes a bit now, something it did not do before.


Should add that after I put the oil in, although I was sure I could a hear a difference the car was still fine it was after about 2 miles it started playing up.

Did you use a funnel? Quite possibly overfilled it and it went into the tube that connects the oil filler neck and the intake. Gummed up your MAF causing the poor running conditions and is getting sucking into the engine causing the smoke from the tailpipe.

If it was me, i would first just pull the MAF, inspect it and inspect inside the intake tube. If you see any oil on it at all, pull out your whole intake and inspect/clean it.

I have cleaned the maf, not sure which is the intake tube, but will have a quick google now for it cheers.

Its the thing you unscrewed the MAF from prior to spraying it with MAF cleaner...

Just checked the overflow pipe and that's pretty clean, I did take the whole air filter out and checked that including the large hose/pipe that connects it to the engine.


Local parts dealer to me did not have maf cleaner, so I bought and used Carplan bright spark, electrical contact cleaner

If the filters clean and the tube between the filler neck and the intake are clean, you're probably OK. BTW that pipe is NOT an overflow tube, oil should never be coming out of it. Its purely a vent.

Anyway, electrical contact cleaner should be fine. You're saying its misfiring; are there any CEL's?

How would I find the CEL,s where are they displayed?

The engine light does come on and when I try drive the car with any kind of revs it's starts flashing, thing is before adding the new oil, car ran perfectly.

Miles on the ignition coils and spark plugs?

Flashing Check Engine Light (CEL) is a sure sign of misfiring. If you read the actual code with an OBD2 reader it should indicate which rotor its happening on.

99% chance you have an ignition problem... coils, wires and/or plugs. All of which are standard wear items.

Autozone (if you're in the US) will sell you stock coils at a significant discount over a dealership with a lifetime warranty... hard to beat. Pick up plugs and order some wires from a reputable vendor such as BHR.

Maybe you accidentally yanked a wire while reaching down for the dipstick / oil filter. In any event you can't go wrong with new coils, plugs, and wires.... always a good thing to feed your 8.

When I bought the car it just had new plugs and coils, well thats what I was told.

The car now has 48 miles on the clock.

Hang on, IS the car misfiring or not? You WILL get a CEL if so and its not clear so far if you've even got a CEL at all. If you have, can you have the codes pulled?

He said it's on and that it flashes, so it's a misfire. That can happen any time, with no warning. Probably a coincidence that it started just after an oil change.

Since he's taking it in for new plugs and stuff, the shop should be able to read the code and see if it needs coils and/or wires. Hopefully it's not the same place that said the car needs synthetic oil.

Lol no its not, and yes the car is definitely miss firing with loads of backfiring tossed in :scared:

Took the car to the garage today, they did nothing as said the cars head gaskets has blown, this is from or of the major servicing stations, and the guys thought this car had a head gasket :(. So it's back home and will do it myself.

Can you explain what a Grad gasket is , and don't ever take it to that garage again. It would be beneficial to you to invest in a code reader, they aren't expensive.

how much oil did you add?

To others, 06 has the overflow lines fed to the intake lines down low on the left of the engine, right? So, would not be in intake..

I would look for any hoses or vacuum lines that came lose while you were adding oil. Did anything catch on anything when you pulled it off? Is the cap back on tight?

Definitely not pulled anything loose, but have checked and double checked again, added 1liter of oil.

Ok a update, replaced plugs, coils, oil & filter car running smoothly again, tho cel light still on and still flashes when I accelerate hard, tho I can not feel the car missing now, seems to run very smoothly with a good strong acceleration.

Will I need a code reader (have bought one waiting on delivery) to clear these faults.
