Hi
Sorry you're having problems
You will receive more meaningful responses if you provide useful information about the car.
Start with the basics;
year, model, transmission, maintenance history, any recent work done

Darkbrew, it's actually easier than that here.

acherry370, there is a wiring loom that runs from the engine bay along the top of the transmission back to where the shifter is. The last 2 connections that this loom makes is actually a set of 4 plugs, 2 black, 2 white. They are the neutral switch (white) and reverse switch (black) wiring. They run into the transmission to two sensors there to detect if the car is in reverse or neutral, so the ECU knows to switch over to the reverse or neutral fueling maps. If there is a short in one of these, it will blow the ign key fuse. Since it is only blowing when you put it into reverse, then the issue is with the wires for the black connectors going to the reverse switch.

If you can get under there and disconnect the black connectors (2 of them), you can leave them disconnected (tie them up out of the way) for the short term until you get home and can fix the wiring short. The car will still run forward fine and still reverse, though just might not behave as smoothly in reverse, and your backup lights won't turn on.

The wiring is the same regardless of transmission, model year etc?
I didn't realize this was such a simple work around... note to self... that said, typical posts start with "help me, my car isn't working right" and give no information to work with.
Pet peeve.

100% agree, they usually don't provide enough information and yes, it's irritating :)

In this case though, it was enough. And yeah, Mazda has been using the same setup of neutral/reverse wiring for a while. Even my 99 Miata has the same setup.
