Can't shift into gear - what is going on?

Very strange thing happened to me last week (04 MT, btw)...driving along, approaching a stop light, put it in neutral to coast a bit, try to shift into 2nd to keep going....AND...nothing! Its like the clutch pedal was doing nothing...I was unable to get it into any gear!

Luckily I was able to coast to the shoulder, and I just sat there with my hazards on trying to get into ANY gear...with no luck, it was just stuck in neutral. I was able to turn it on, and restart no problem, but when I went to put it in gear, I could feel the car react, like almost trying to move a bit, but I couldn't force it in gear. I had to call a tow truck.

THEN, after my garage takes a look (they pushed it into their shop)...they check everything out ...and cant find a damn thing wrong with it! They said it drives fine now...they found no problems!

The mechanic said that he suspects it was stuck in a gear...but how could I have been pulled over and sitting with the car on and not stall??

Im glad I dont have to pay big $$, but I'm concerned that it will happen again and I won't know how to remedy the situation.

Oh, I already went through the broken clutch pedal bracket fiasco a few years ago...fortunately I was able to pull it, and weld it up with reinforcement plates, so the bracket is solid as a rock, (I am actually really proud of this fix, I did a nice job) so the bracket is not the issue. The mechanic said the hydraulics looked like they were working fine.

Ok RX8 geniuses...what happened to me????

Most likely the throwout bearing is toast or nearly toast. I'm actually sitting in a dealership waiting room right now with my 8 up on a lift for the very same issue. As long as its in for tranny work, I decided to go the whole shooting match and drop one of the flywheel, pressure plate, clutch combo kits from SR Motorsports into my ride.

Hi, I have a 2005 rx8 6 speed with 145 000km on it. It is doing the same thing as you exept it's worst... When it does this(around 1/5 of the time), I have to drive and shift without using the clutch by reving it abit and when I come to a complete stop, I have to make sure I'm already in a gear... And when I'm in a gear, the car moves all by itself... Sometimes I even have to turn the car off, then put it in 1st gear and turn it back on and it doesn't always work sometimes it just cranks cranks and cranks when I'm in gear... I suspect strongly it is the bearing. I don't know why but I tried changing the clutch fluid and bleeding it and it helped alot! Gonna change my bearing next week at the same time I change the clutch and the pressure plate since either way u have to remove the transmission to change the bearing. Oh yeah and when the car is warm, after 10 minutes of driving, when I try to shift from 1st to 2nd gear above 7000rpm it grinds... Anybody know y? Thx!

Need help with rx-8

I own a Mazda rx-8 and I need y'all help. Yesterday I was driving and it felt funny. When I put it in a higher gear with a low mph it will stay at like 2000-3000 rpm but it would got like go up to 6000 rpm when I press on gas like I was revving it up so then on the way home to park her and look to see the problem she didn't want to go in a gear at all so I was rolling to my house I start to go up a hill so I had to shove it in a gear to go but I know it was struggling to get in the 1st gear then when I went to park I was in neutral and only holding clutch she started to jump after the 3rd time I caught her off! If anyone have ideas what wrong please let me know. Thanks for your help

sounds like a slipping clutch.

concur with throwout bearing... unless something in the hydraulic circuit is acting up intermittently or due to temperature. I'd say this is less likely than throwout bearing though. hydraulics would include the master and slave cylinders (and technically the lines, but if you're not loosing fluid they SHOULD be fine). in a very unlikely scenario, it could be a wonky pressure plate.

try searching for "rx8 y16m manual"... you might be able to find a symptoms and causes guide in a mazda transmission technical manual.

1st gear only

hey guys new to the forum i wanted to post because I'm kinda having a problem like this but not exactly. i have a 2007 rx8 6mt with 51k miles. the same thing is happening to me but only in first gear. when I come to a complete stop while car is running shell shift back into first but when I'm rolling from neutral and try it doesn't go in. I've noticed if i get clutch to catch point keeping pressure on stick it goes back in. i was told from owner that she needs a trans. fluid change just wondering if thats the problem or going to become a bigger problem such like on this thread thanks guys!

my only problem with that is its just the first gear and it's spotty doesnt happen every time but more then most. and it only happens when rolling from neutral with car running
