CAI Throttle Response

1 Attachment(s)
Ok so idk if it is still setting up the trims and whatnot. But i have taken it out probably about 6 times after installing my AEM CAI and it still isn't any better. The throttle response is extremely slow when flooring it from a stop. Its almost like i didn't even put my foot on the gas for about 5 secs. If i ease into it then it has no problems at all. I will be driving it this week but im not sure it will get any better. I changed the MAF when i changed the intake too. Maybe this has something to do with it? Its a DELPHI MAF. I still have the stock MAF should i put that back on?

Try putting the stock MAF back on. My question though is why did you change the stock MAF in the first place? Is there something wrong with it?

The AEM was also marketed as a Mazdaspeed CAI (which was sold by Mazda dealers and warrantied by Mazda) and is made to work with the stock MAF. That is your problem. Put the stock MAF back on. I have this installed on my 40th AE RX8 and it works great, plug and play, with the stock MAF

Okay stock MAF eliminated the problem.. But i do notice that the DELPHI MAF had better performance in the higher RPM, obviously that doesn't matter if its terrible lower range. But with that, has anyone tried non stock MAF? Any better out there? I doubt it but just curious if anyone has tried any others.

Can you define and quantify "better performance"? The MAF just reads airflow for how much fuel to inject. If the stock MAF is producing a performance difference at high rates of flow then it is because of a differing fuel volume being injected. That it is entirely something that can be corrected in the tune to add or subtract fueling.

Just had better response in the 5-7000 rpm range. I am aware that tuning would help with performance. lol Obviously. My question was to see weather anyone has had any noticeable response improvement with a different MAF.

RIWWP 03-17-2014 12:01 PM

There hasn't been much experimentation with aftermarket MAF units on the forums, so you may never get an answer.

"Response" is often misused badly, so not clearly defining exactly what you mean makes it hard for anyone to agree with you and have it mean anything.

FYI in troubleshooting my oem MAF during tuning, I installed a Delphi MAF that was sold on Amazon, marketed 'new' and had all high reviews...

Ran like complete garbage, threw extra codes, etc.

Delphi also has crap Alternators.

Stay away from Delphi.

HAppened to me once, I swap my MAF to a brand new one (Beck & Arnley), and it gave me a CEL.

swap back to old stock one problem was gone.

OnCam 03-19-2014 01:37 AM

so how much better is the AEM intake compared to stock?

gwilliams6 03-19-2014 05:23 AM

Around 5hp depending on ambient air temps and barometric pressure.

jon15805 03-19-2014 07:57 AM

Well In my opinion, not really any noticeable power gains of course since the stock intake is already good. But as you get higher in rpms the sound of the engine is much more aggressive. I am not a fan of loud cars. It is noticeably louder yes but in a good way. It makes driving it more enjoyable for sure. It looks good in the engine bay, but I swapped the stock under tray out for a BHR one. The instructions are pretty terrible but the install is really straight forward so it's not hard to install. I highly recommend it for a more enjoyable ride. I have listened to other intakes and none of them compare to the AEM.

Oh and I think that the dyno chart that came with it showed a 4hp peak gain from stock to AEM.

And only at 8,000 RPM.

How often do you drive at 8 grand?

Better yet, how long do you stay at 8,000 RPM?

This is why Racing Beat intake is better.

More usable power.

nycgps 03-20-2014 10:27 PM

but ... AEM looks COOL ... butt dyno saids 100% hp increased ...

I had it before(mazdaspeed) and I gotta say it makes me feel my car is 100% faster !

jon15805 03-21-2014 05:05 AM

Neither provide any significant gains lol The AEM sounds way better than the RB in my opinion. And I also don't want to pay 360$ for it to look stock.

The Racing Beat has never beat the AEM for useable hp. Back up your claim with figures if you can.
