blue/grayish smoke?

Hey guys, I've noticed that my 8 has been pushing grayish blue smoke, stories just blue. I know that blue is oil. But is it normal to be pushing that out of the exhaust? I also noticed it does it when I'm putting it in gears. It's done it 4 times in the past 5 or 6 months. There's no grinding or anything pound coming from the transmission either. Any comments?

You do know that this engine consumes oil right.....?

Emery_ 03-01-2013 11:57 AM

Also if you premix, the blue smoke could be more noticeable and happen more often.

White smoke would most likely be coolant being burned, which I would say is more of a concern...

Yea i know it consumes oil, but I don't use premix either. And no white smoke, there's steam but cuz in the morning it's been really cold. blue smoke is my concern, unless it's normal. I've never seen it push out blue smoke, that's why I'm kinda freaking out lol. I also have a gutted cat, would that be another reason why it's pushing the blue smoke? Still doing my best to learn more about it.

Yeah a gutted cat would also make it more noticeable. I have a gutted cat, and I sometimes see blue smoke when the engine is cold, but I also pre-mix. I have never seen it when the engine is warmed up. Just keep an eye out for excessive oil consumption. If it starts using a lot of oil...you're looking at bad oil control rings.

Thank you!! That's what i was looking for! :lol2: And I've seen it when i start it cold only. Never when it's hot. And how much would it be too much oil consumption? I check it every two fill ups and it's at half or a little over. Sometimes a little lower but never below the low level.:eyetwitch

Every two fill ups and your oil level is at about the half way mark? That seems a bit excessive to me...

Really? Someone told me that it's normal? What would a normal oil burn be?:banghead:

It can vary car by car I guess. Nornal would be the amount it usually uses. Too much would be an increase from the normal amount of course

Oh ok, just depends. And to make sure on the oil rings, where are they located? Would i have to pull stuff apart?

When the rings fail, people usually get the motor rebuilt since you have to pull it and take it apart anyway.
