Blinking Cel
 

Well this is the first time this has happened to me. I was on my way to work today, in 3rd gear doing about 40mph (4krpms) and my cel began to blink. It blinked for about 1 minute straight, and then stopped. I didn't notice any power loss, or wierd noises at all. I pulled over, shut my car off...and restarted my car...no cel...drove the other half to work...no cel. I noticed once I got to work though, that for the first 20 seconds or so when I reved it a bit, that it was backfiring a bit more than usual...but that went away. After it went away, I shut my car off again and restarted it...no cel. Does anyone have any clue as to what would cause this cel to start blinking like this? I know that the blinking cel = bad...but like I said I didn't notice anything wierd at all...and I wasn't even in a high rpm when it happened. Monday night I did get gas (93 octane), but made it successfully from the station to home....and home to work...and work to home yesterday without a cel. The only modifications I have are the Mazdaspeed Intake...and I checked and everything is secure (no lose hoses).

Why would it be damaged? Also why would it go away like this?

i dont know why it would be damaged. like i said, it is either damaged or defective, and is pretty common to the rx-8, if you do a search for ignition coil or misfire you will find many threads about this. it has even happened to me.

as to why it would go away, the flashing cel indicates when the problem is happening. it generally only happens with there is a higher load/rpm situation with the engine, as that puts the most load on the ignition system.

Similar happened to mine. Reving brought a flashing cel for a bit, then off. later it went solid. Ignition coils. But yours could be anything really.

Undertsand that a blinking cel is just what happens the 1st couple times a particular problem (code) occurs. If the same problem (code) continues to repeat itself...it goes solid to get you to attend to it. Find a canscan or scanalyser (or your dealer) and check out what code it is and do it soon as they go away if they don't repeat after some drive cycles I believe.

I get a blinking CEL someetimes while going about 113-115 in 3rd (AT shifting manually) but i don't notice any change in power or anything else
