BHR midpipe Rattle
Just got a BHR midpipe installed and it has a rattle at idle sometimes when i give it gas.
Sounds exactly like this. Hopefully the uploader doesnt mind me using this. Anyone know what it could be ? |
Check the BHR midpipe thread, they were talking about it sometime ago...
|
didn't someone recently have a similar issue and posted in the BHR midpipe thread?
I want to say it was Paimon? what exhaust are you running? Everything tightened / torqued properly? and last but most importantly: did you talk to Ray? |
make sure you are using the OEM donut gasket. I was using the TXS gasket and it was slightly smaller than the OEM one. It caused the flanges to just barely touch once you tightened down the midpipe to catback. Replaced with brand new OEM and all noises gone.
Also make 100% certain that you mount the midpipe without any preload. What i mean by that is loosen the header bolts and the catback bolts ... give the midpipe a good wiggle to ensure it is free of tension ... then start to torque down everything. Edit: I believe the BHR gasket is the OEM one. I didn't use it because i sold my free txs midpipe with the bhr gasket. |
jorge: I had a shop install it for me. Its paired with an exoticspeed rii titan exhaust which is loud already, it may be related.
I havent spoken to Ray ive been emailing Charles but he hasnt replied to me. Whats rays username again ? paimon: No new gaskets were used that im aware of, i stood there for the whole install. Im thinking of calling up the shop and askig them to redo it or something. |
I just watched the video. Did you buy brand new or used? That video almost sounds like a blown out resonator. Not sure how many BHR pipes ever had that issue though. Might want to go grab a sound clip of your issue.

paimon: I bought it used. Originally the Midpipe had davesport CAT but it broke apart. It is now catless according to the previous owner. BHR sent him a new CAT that i sold already. I just got back from the Gym and when i started the car the rattle was a distinct. Sometimes you really hear it.
sevens: I have been emailing Charles but he seemed pretty pissed cause i made it seem as if i was doubting the quality of the product which wasnt my intention at all |
any possibility that there are pieces of the cat still floating around in the resonator?
|
thats what i was thinking as well... i have held the Midpipe vertically alot of times and nothing comes out. Is it possible the material may be stuck to the walls ? But i dont see how that would cause a rattle.
|
I know it is tedious, but the first thing I would start with is to remove the pipe and take a gander inside.
|
Will do. Im going back to the shop next week. Whenever i drive a while also the tips go up and literally almost touch my shrouds. Not pleased.
|
see my you tube video. i had the same problem. sent it back to charles and he fixed the problem
|
that video in the OP is yours i think haha !!
What was the problem ?? See i bought it used so im not sure if charles would accept it. |
Thanks Charles. Didnt know that haha.
I will bring it back to the shop and have it checked. However, i dont remember the exhaust coming with an extra donut gasket. |
Last thing, so if it is a 2.75" diameter exhaust .. its not the donut gasket thats the issue correct ??
|
could still be, depends on the flared end on the flanges width. A donut gasket shouldn't fit inside of the catback's flared end (You can see what i mean by taking the OEM gasket and placing it on the OEM catbacks inlet flange). Unfortunately even when TXS provides gaskets, their larger gasket for their newer exhaust design is matched exactly to the flange. Ideally the donut should be ever so slightly larger to prevent the flanges from touching eachother (creates a squeaking noise) and allowing the pipe a small pivot point (prevents a clunking noise / cracks).
edit: my issue was that I was using TXS's "oem replacement" donut .. which again, is actually smaller (gasket wall thickness) than the real oem donut gasket, and it allowed the oem flange to touch the outlet flange on the BHR pipe. squeak squeak city. |

I dont get why they dont send these out when you purchase the exhaust wtf. |

I hope it wasn't too confusing ... i was tearing my hair out trying to figure out the issue with my random squeaking.
|
take a look at where your midpipe and catback meet ...
https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/i...WWw52B8Fls9SS2 If it looks like that, then you are using the wrong (too small) donut gasket. |
^ i saw your video and it mustve been pretty bad being able to squeak it while moving the tips.
So i contacted Exoticspeed and the piping is a true 3 inch and the sales rep said all flanges are compatible with oem flanges. So i dont know. Should i order this ? Exoticspeed donut Gasket - All Mazda Rx8 |
Thanks Charles i will place an order. Im assuming theres nothing wrong with driving the car as it is right ?? Except for rattling and the raspiness.
I also noticed theres like a "bolt in a tin can spinning" sound when i rev. Excuse my comparison but it sounds like a GTR when you let off the throttle (sorry but thats the closest thing it sounds like) when the guy lets off the throttle sounds like something spinning. Which is what mine sounds like .. possibly donut gasket being spun ? |
So im about to order the new donut gasket as Charles recommended the turboxs one but here is what it says on the site.
Replacement Donut Gasket for TurboXS Mazda RX8-CBE to TurboXS Racepipe or TurboXS Catpipe NOT FOR USE WITH STOCK OR OTHER RACEPIPE/CATPIPE; USE WITH TURBOXS PARTS ONLY Search for "RX8-DONUT Gasket - STOCK Catpipe" for donut gasket to work with Stock catpipe Would this work with the BHR midpipe and exoticspeed exhaust ?? Or am i better off getting the donut gasket from Exoticspeed. |
Recorded a video of the rattle at idle:
