Hey everybody…For those of you who have the BHR Ignition Kit, how many of you have experience either coil or wire failure?...I am having a slight starting issue which I have been diagnosing, and I believe it may be either my BHR coils or wires…My battery, alternator, starter, plugs, and compression are all fine…I can figure the issue out on my own…I just want to know how common it is for the BHR coils and/or wires to fail so that I can suck it up and realize it is a possibility…I know a member recently had one of his coils “break”…Any feedback would be greatly appreciated…Thanks!
Just to add on...I'm not bashing the kit...I love it...I'm just forcing myself to realize nothing is perfect.

I have emailed Charles, but he is currently unable to give a detailed response at the moment...I understand, and know he will when he gets the chance...So as of now, I want to ask those on the forum.

I don't think coil or wire failed, or you wouldn't even be able to start up or would get misfire.
My guess is that the dwell on the coil isn't adjust, that's why.
You'll need to adjust your dwell to get better performance out of BHR kit, via AP or other flash.
Since I installed the kit, it did take a bit longer for me to start up when warm, but that's about it.

What do you mean by starting issue? FYI, I had a starting issue, running rough at start issue and i even tested the coils and it was misfiring but it turns out I had a coolant leak into the combustion chamber that was causing it and it was not the coils.

Yes, it is taking longer to turn over, and sounds like it isn't going to start, but does at the last second...This all started about 2 weeks ago...Actually, a friend of mine had one of his coils "break", and his 8 started up just fine...He just had a power loss issue.
I mentioned that to Charles actually...I think it may be coolant related...Did you by any chance get sprayed by smokey coolant through your AC vents?...lol
If coolant is leaking into the combustion chamber after the motor cools off then you will have trouble starting it. Coolant through your ac vents? No, that would be very bad.
It has happened about 10 or 15 times...Started several months ago, and only did it on certain days for just a few seconds when I would turn the AC on...Then it stopped, and happened again for a few days...Which is right about when my little starting issue occurred :/ Like I said...I can figure this out...I'm a scientist...I analyze a problem, figure it out, and fix it...It's what I do...lol...I'm just getting anxious since I have limited time to fix the issue.

I'm trying to figure out how coolant can even get into the vents. I don't see how it is possible really.
Okay, I guess if the core had a crack on the top it could suck coolant through the HVAC system but I still don't see how. It would not be related to your starting issue though I wouldn't think.

On another note, work day is over!...Time for this chick to go install her new fuel pump...If any of you come up with bright ideas, feel free to post...I'll check when I get home.
Speaking from experience on shorting out the BHR coils, I personally have done this because I didn't make enough clearence, but if they shorted, you should not be able to start the car, it will blow a fuse instantly and the starter will not turn over. Doesn't sound like your problem.

Yeah, that definitely isn't my problem...*sigh*...I'll solve this stupid issue...It's just becoming annoying.
I doubt it is your problem because in the test link above my engine would start and run fine with one sparkplug wire removed regardless of position, but that is the way to test the coils and wires to be sure.

I didn't watch the clearance and it rubbed till it went through the insulation then while at a red light it just died. Wasn't one of my most intelligent moments since I did the install.

I had one of the coils go bad on my BHR kit. Symptoms were hard starts, poor acceleration (especially under 4k rpms), and poor fuel mileage. Oddly enough the idle was perfect and I never got a CEL.
Search the BHR kit thread for testing your kit with an inductive timing light. Otherwise the best thing to do is remove the kit to rule out it isn't the problem.
