best way to clean the carbon out?

Ok Guys,
I have been reading a little about this lately and I need to know what is the best way to clean the carbon buildup out of our beloved engine. Just go by the old Pep Boys and buy a case of Tecron or what?

Atf........

It is a falacy that ATF will 'clean' out an engine. ATFs have actually very little detergency, and are poor cleaners.

Lots of info on the oil analysis site, 'BOBISTHEOILGUY.COM'

some of the "old school" rotary gurus like Rob from pineapple racing swear by using water. letting it get sucked in while the engine is running and at temp. there are otehr way also. ill see if i can get a step by step from someone

I personally just make sure to hit redline at least once (but usually more) every time the car is out. The higher rpms hold off carbon buildup more than anything.

What RG said. And it is fun. :D

What about Sea Foam. I used it on my Harley Davidson F150 and it worked great!

redlining is fine- but what if you already have some carbon build up. what to do about it is the question. replacing a bunch of engines in auto 8s isnt the answer.

There's a write-up about doing it to RX-7 13B engines at http://rotaryresurrection.com/ under Tech links. Basically, what Zoom44 said, suck in water while the engine is running, the steam helps break up the carbon deposits.

hey thanks for the link. interesting it lists rob as a source in teh article. i should spend more time talking to him. i also emailed a couple people for their recommendations. ill post wheni get responses

Here is a response from Racing Beat's Jim Mederer. He agrees that the best way is to avoid carbon buildup in the first place. Some other interesting tidbits in the reply as well

I have not heard of any higher-volume pump available from Mazda. Of course, it could be true - the modification we offer is based on a high-flow pump supplied by Mazda on a supercharged engine we ran here. The only possible reason I can think of for them to do that would be for very cold or very hot starting, where extra oil can be helpful. However, since the MOP only runs wide open at high RPM/high volumetric efficiency, it seems they could simply re-flash the ECU to provide more oil at cranking. They certainly wouldn't want a stock engine running more oil ALL THE TIME - oil consumption is already an issue.

I haven't seen any carbon build-up problem in the engines we have disassembled. The best way I know to avoid it is: Break the engine in slowly and correctly; change oil regularly; and run the engine HARD regularly.

You are welcome to share this info with anyone you wish.

Jim Mederer

well, looks like I have been doing the good thing all along! I take it up to 8.5k for short duration (getting on the interstate etc) at least 1x a day! Still the dang plugs really foul up easily. ANd like other have said- radio off windows down and listen to that baby sing!

What would be the effect of using high-detergent/high solvent Carb-Out type products?

In my Talon, part of my Spring maitenance ritual was to spray a can of Mopar Combustion Chanber Conditioner through the throttle body and let it sit overnight to soften the carbon. The next day I would take it for a hard highway run to blast the crap and carbon out. It was like a tune-up in an aerosol can, the MCCC was. But rotary's are completely different beasties.

Yep I believe in water. Used it the other day on the Buick.

olddragger 06-26-2005 08:48 PM

also can use automatic trans fluid. sparkplugs out, put a little in, let it set a little. put it all back together. put on gas mask ,crank it up and wait for the smoke to clear.! Clears the air of flying bugs also AND makes the wife go inside the house!
