Air Intake Installed - CEL Gained... HELP

I have a 2010 and I recently installed a short air intake system (air filter is in engine bay sitting in front of VFAD).
MAP sensor is installed and all oem lines where left connected to stock inlets (intake pipe begins after stock rubber intake).
After I installed it turned the car on, started right up, sounds like a beast, and smells like im spitting out straight up fuel and oil. Very potent.
The next day I turned the car on and it struggled to start. Sounded like a 68 mustang idling and vibrating a hell of a lot.
I let the car run and it eventually evened out and sounded fine.
Took the car around the block and CEL came on. I immediatly put the stock intake back on and took the neg. battery terminal off. CEL still there.
About a day later the CEL turned off by itself.

WTF happened?

We have a MAF, not a MAP sensor (just FYI). What intake did you buy and was it for the 09+ RX-8? Post pics so we can get a visual to see if it is installed correctly.

WTF happened? Sounds like you didn't do any research first, and began hacking on your car.
Guess we need to see a pic or two because I cannot visualize WTF you did.....or attempted to do.
It is not uncommon to have to do a reset after installing a new intake, but in this case.....I'm just not sure what you did.
When you put the stock one back in, the CEL went away on it's own after two drive cycles because it was no longer seeing the issue. Had you done the rest immediately after putting it back to stock, it would've probably clear the CEL.

You got a real car now, you just can't throw a cheap filter like a civic any more, go buy a racing beat, or aem.

I popped it back on real quick for the pics. I just didn't connect the maf sensor again. you get the point

Doesn't look like an aftermarket intake for the RX8... likely a "Universal" one.
Hard to tell from the pic, but is the tube size smaller than OEM?
That would definitely cause you problems.

2010rx8 08-01-2010 05:03 PM

yes the tube is different size. there is an adaptor on it. tube size can cause the cel?

Jon316G 08-01-2010 05:06 PM

Yup... you need the ID size to be the same as OEM or it'll play havoc with the MAF reading.
Honestly bud... you're better off going back to stock or go with a brand name intake designed for RX8s such as AEM or Racing Beat.
Keep in mind, no aftermarket intake will give you performance gain... only increased sound.

Mazurfer 08-01-2010 05:10 PM

Yepper, gonna agree....especially since Jon knows what the heck he is talking about!
That diameter is smaller and that will cause issues.

Oh.......and let's not forget to leave at least one screen before the MAF....................did it have any screen in it at all from the MAF forward to the filter?

RX8pwnage 08-01-2010 05:16 PM

WOW WTF :wallbash:

Have you done ANY research as what you have under the hood?

2010rx8 08-01-2010 05:56 PM

No screen. I will try with the screen and a larger tube to match.

Quick question - Why would AEM make inlets for the three tubes if they could use the stock mazda inlets?

OEM's accordion tube allows you to expand/stretch the opening so those fittings can get inserted, then allows the opening to contract around the fitting allowing a good seal.

AEM uses a metal tube and the three "fittings" are welded onto the tube to make it one piece.
Obviously, you can not use the OEM fittings with this design.
This is also nice because the OEM plastic fittings can easily break.

I have to agree. What you have done serves no purpose but to suck hot air into your engine, and create an eyesore on an otherwise gorgeous 2010 RX8. Spend $300 bucks and get yourself an AEM or REVi. Trust me you will be glad you did.

WOW. It has been covered but that thing fails is so many ways on a technical level. Even the $150.00 knock off AEM ebay CAI looks top notch compared to that thing.
