Air Conditioning (AC) Complaints
 

Hi all. I did a quick search in the forum but couldn't find any other mention of this.

(Firstly, I'm in San Diego, where it was a little too warm in my car yesterday after running around playing ultimate frisbee at lunch. My apologies to those of you in actual winter climes who don't have to deal with this in January).

It seems that at low (idle) RPM, I get little or no effectiveness from my AC. If I run the engine up to 2500-3000 RPM, the air definitely gets colder instantly, and when I let off, it's back to nearly ambient (actually, somewhere in between conditioned and ambient). I can also feel sort of feel the compressor engaging when the RPM goes up. Is this a feature or a bug? It's mildly irritating when you are sitting somewhere stopped long enough that the cabin starts to heat up. I just wanted to make sure this isn't by design before I take the car in the Mazda.

Sounds like you need to get your a/c amplifier replaced. There is a tsb on that. Had the same problem and the changed amp fixed it good.

The amplifier will help. But the 8 has such a large rpm range that can harm the AC compressor. So it runs slower at idle than most AC compressors. This means that the 8 will never cool great at idle. Check the threads here for the Service Bulletins and see if your serial number is included in the amplifier update. It may help your issue.

Would it not make more sense to have the compressor disengage at high RPM?

I had the same problem. Take it to the dealeraship, tell them your A/C barely works and they will fix it, covered under warranty. Now my AC works fine.

The engine computer causes the a/c to disengage at idle r.p.m. due to the low torque that the rotory developes. I got this tid bit from my local service mgr at Mazda.

it disengages at 65% WOT also.
