8 won"t start.....help!!!
 

I have an 05' 8 and Its giving me some problems. Since I've had it (about a month) it has started perfectly. I went out of town for a week and came back to a dead battery. I tried to jump it off thinking the battery just needed to be relpaced but when I tried to start it the starter seemed to spin but not "turn over". I've been told that the 8 has low compression and cold start problems. Can someone help me?!?!:banghead:

Pull the starter and have a shop check the starter drive.

i'm not sure what you mean by "spin but not turn over."

take the plugs out and give them a good cleaning in seafoam.

while they're out, try to start it. if it's flooded, this will expel some of the gas in there.

also try charging/changing the battery.

where in TN do you live? if you live close enough i'd come and help.

Thanks...all of this I've thought of trying but just wanted to see if it was a certain problem that others were having...I live in West TN...Martin.

What I meant by "spin but not turn over" was that I've heard of older starters on the 8 not being able to spin fast enough to start the car. It sounds as if its trying to turn over but its like there is no spark. I'm going to get a new battery and change the plugs first thing tomorrow.

If your battery is old replace it. If not recharge the battery.

You may have the old starter.

They have upgraded the battery.

Make sure you get at least 550 CCA's, check theTSB

1.Use jump leeds to connect to additional power source (see note 1).
2.Unplug Air pump connnector (see note 2)
3.Take fuel pump fuse out (see note 3)
4.Crank for 4 seconds, pause for 2 seconds, repeat for about a minute
5.Leave for a minute
6.Crank for 4 seconds, pause for 2 seconds, repeat for about a minute
7.Put fuel pump fuse back in
8.Crank for up to 10 seconds, if it catches but doesn't start, stop cranking
9.If not started go back to step 3
10.If started, wait 30 seconds for oil pressure to rise
11.Stand on throttle until white smoke stops coming out of the exhaust
12.Disconnect jump leads
13.Leave to warm up on idle for a few minutes
14.Put air punp connector back on (see note 3)
15.Go for a nice long drive to recharge the battery

1.An additional power source is required as the standard battery will not crank the engine for long enough to clear a serious flooding. Eiher connect to an additional high capacty battery, or to another car with its engine running.

2.The Fuel pump fuse is number 22, a 20A, 3 from the top of the second column of the fuse box.

3.The air pump connector is on the black circlular motor housing to the left of the oil filler cap. Removal is recommend to reduce power drain on the battery, to prevent fuel vapour blowing back in to the chambers, and to reduce the possibility of a backfire after starting which can damage the catalyst.


Taking out the fuel pump fuse and cranking on it gets rid of some of the unburnt fuel. When you re-insert the fuel pump fuse you need to be quiet aggressive when cranking. Its important not to stop and start when you re-insert the fuel pump fuse. These opportunities are golden and you really can't afford to waist them. It will catch eventually but its gonna take a lot longer than normal.
Took me a good hour and half to get mine going once when the battery went dead. Hooking it up to another car is essential in these circumstances.
