8 doesn't start - emissions need to run self-diagnostic?

Hey guys, I resonantly replaced the clutch in my 2004 rx8, and at one point had the battery connected, ignition on and the O2 disconnected (did not crank it), and now I have the car all back together but it won't start.
I have had a similar problem when the heat shield fell off the cat and I disconnected the O2 with ignition on (but not running). when this happened I towed it to the dealership and they wiped some codes and it worked fine.
This time I plugged in my code reader and it tells me there are no error codes but that "some of the vehicle's emission monitors have not run their diagnostic testing."
How do I get my car to start!!

does anyone other then people looking to fix there car ever look at these threads?

Maybe nobody has an answer.

Define "Won't start" better please.
When you turn the key into the on position is your dash coming to life?
Does it turn over and not start?
Tried pull starting it?

"some of the vehicle's emission monitors have not run their diagnostic testing."

Most likely from removing the battery.

Are you sure you reconnected the little starter solenoid wire? You might have shorted something out and blew a fuse.

OP, you do know the motor cant be shut down cold for fear of flooding, when you did your clutch, was the motor warm before you shut it down. I ask because I know a guy who know's a guy who wanted to do the clutch when everything was cold underneath, not to burn himself , started his 8 from cold , drove his car onto ramps and shut it off, thus causing a flooding issue .

thanks for the responses, and you are correct, I should have given more detail.
When the car was shut off it was fully warmed up.
when turning the key the dash lights up as normal, turn it to start and the engine turns over just fine but does not catch, sputter or even hint at starting. I have try deflooding techniques, throttle to the floor and cranking, pulling all the plug and grounding them then cranking... nothing. I have new plugs on the way just in case the plugs were so badly fouled that I couldn't clean them well enough.
I tried bump starting as well, in case the battery/boosting wasn't getting it to turn over fast enough. I had a bunch of guys push me to the top of a loading ramp and push me down trying to start... same thing, turns over fine but does not start.

would an ECU re-set clear that error "some of the vehicle's emission monitors have not run their diagnostic testing." worth a try as it's not going to loose you anything.

TeamRX8 07-13-2011 04:37 AM

those internal OBD2 emissions tests have nothing to do with the engine starting and they cannot start and complete until the car has gone through a series of drive cycles

resetting the ECU (which is what having the battery disconnected will do) is what cleared out the previous completion of those tests so that will not accomplish anything useful

if the engine cranks but won't start you or a mechanic will need to start with the basics and work your way through finding and correcting what the cause is
