2nd gear grinds at high rev clutch not fully disengaging maybe???

It grinds when i go 1st to 2nd gear at high revs

new trans fluid did nothing
bad synchro maybe

Could it be the clutch that doesn't full disengage???
The clutch has been changed this summer and the problem seems to have appear after that?
Maybe it has not been properly adjusted???

I have a similar problem with 2nd gear. I think mine also will grind when shifting into 2nd at mid RPM range. I have an '04 w/ 45k, located in AZ. Mine started grinding around 40k, only on occasion though, and I think it's only when the engine is cold. I just, at 45k, swapped the transmission and differential oils for Amsoil - 75-110 for the diff w/ 2 oz additional friction modifiers. 25% Amsoil Synchromesh and 75% Amsoil syn GL4. Shifts were immediately smoother, but the grinding got worse over the next couple of weeks. I think it's because there was at the same time a drastic cooling in temps here in AZ. The past week I've been blipping in neutral to 4k before driving cold to splash lube the transmission, and so far it hasn't been grinding anymore.

Does anyone know where i could buy the gears and the sychronizes the stock or any aftermarket. to install ? i want to buy them new and made to them also and cryogenesis.!

Check out this thread about failing clutch assemblies which can cause the grinding synchros:

mine is doing the exact same thing, above 5500 it grinds like hell into second. that and my clutch pedal has been super squeaky since my mom flooded it about a month ago. its getting kind of annoying but it all started after that. is there any fix other then tearing it apart to swap out the synchros? and does anyone know if i have to replace them myself or does the 100k warranty cover it.

Wow, I'm thinking that this is a common reoccuring event. I just posted about this last night in the DIY forum because I to am having the same damn problem and I am going to need parts. Granted second gear gets a shit ton of use, this is kinda of rediculous. It seems to me that more and more people are having this same issue. Bad design? Poor Materials? I can't believe that everyone is a crappy shifter to the point where second gear is damaged or destroyed.

Has anyone figured this out yet, mine has been grinding for a while but higher than 7k rpms. I just replaced my clutch pedal and that solved all my other porblems like having to work in the reverse gear and the clunking into gear when driving. Hocknscary87, I would get you a new clutch pedal. It may work now, but when I took my master cylinder off, my car was no longer driveable due to the broken clutch. Now I have my new clutch pedal and I love it except 2nd gear at high rpms. 2nd is nice and smooth until 7500+. Any other tips or help would be great, getting ready to change the tranny oil, how much does it use?

When I first started autocrossing, my car would grind when I changed to 2nd at high revs, it was because when I changed at high revs/speed I was trying to do it too quickly and grabbing the gearstick too hard and pulling it which stops it lining up with the gear correctly. Now I am in less of a rush and do a normal/light change even though I am near the redline. Lightly hold the gear stick and let it slide into second.

hocknscary87 11-25-2011 12:49 AM

I'm gonna have to try that tomorrow but its pretty common in mine, i've had it go in nice a few times but only before it reaches operationg temp, and my clutch pedal bracket was replaced.

+1 on this quote. While autocrossing with 9k 2nd shift got nasty grind and missed shift out of nowhere. A few days later. SNAP while starting car. Left base of steel clutch assy broke like it was torn paper two places and a spot weld broke too. Dealer replaced for FREE and now pedal is 1/2" higher than before and shifts are cleaner with the clutch feeling extra strong now.

Note that since I've owned this car changing the gearbox oil at 60k improved shifting but there will always be a minor delay thru neutral to 2nd so power shifting is out of the question. Kind of a minor double shift feel. But no issues at 9k when one is firm but patient with full clutch deep release.
