2009 RX8 Oil Over Consumption WTF?

I bought a 2009 RX8 about 8539 miles ago. The low oil light came on about 1200 miles in to owning. I took it to the local dealship and they topped it off. Well since this I have had the light come on about ever 1100-1500 miles after getting the oil changed or topped off. There is no visible leaking oil, no oil slick under the car, no smoke from the exhaust or engine. There is a slick back firing, coughing or sputtering at times if you will. I took it back to the dealership and they had me coming in ever 500 miles to check my oil levels, it would be down about a half a quart or so everytime ending in them telling me there was nothing wrong with the car. I have no clue what to do about this. I realize the car uses some oil in the rotary process of the engine but this is a bit rediculous. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

If that is too 'rediculous' (or you find you can't afford the two dollars for the half-a-quart) may I suggest a nice Dodge Caravan?

1/2 qt every 500 miles. Hmmm I thought the average was about 1500 to a 1/2 qt.

Isn't this information available in the user manual?

The mileage is correct and consumption is correct. The last 2 oil changes were at 7434 and 5904, both due to the low engine oil light coming on. I dont have a problem with buying the oil to top it off, just for a car that is suppose to go 3000 miles between oil changes on resonable driving habits it seems a bit rediculous to me. The manual does have the catch all phrase in it on page 8-12 saying that oil consumption varies based on driving habit and engine load. It also says to check the oil after every second fueling.

It's in italian :)
BTW it says to check your level every other fill-up so every 900km or so. the average consumption here is 1kg1\qt every 2000km but i'd really pick what the users says with a grain of salt, and check his intake if he pours in 1qt every 500miles!

Well if this is normal, Ill roll with it. I bought the car with the understanding that it was going to eat some oil. I really love the car, this is just my first rotary vehicle. So it has been freaking me out a bit. I appreciate all the quick replies.

Yeah I have kept every oil change record thus far but that is the only issue I have had with the vehicle. Guess its time to put some oil in the trunk of the car.

My '09 uses about a quart every 2500-3000 miles, depending how it is driven. This seems about normal, compared to what others have reported.

If they are topping off the oil correctly, and the low oil light is coming on in the miles indicated, that sounds like a lot of oil use. I'm guessing the low oil light would come on at around the low point on the dipstick, which is 2 quarts from full.

As others have mentioned, check your air filter to see if oil is getting into your intake.

There were a few '09 owners that early on reported higher than usual oil consumption, which is better than low or no oil consumption, BTW. But apparently, despite the 3rd oil injector, the '09s were designed to use less oil than the previous 8s, ie, better distribution should result in less oil needed.
