2 high pitched sounds....exhaust leak?

I have 2 high pitched whistling type sounds...1 coming from my engine bay and another coming from exhaust near the down pipe or turbo....I think.

The whistle coming from the engine bay seems to be coming from my alternator. When I start the car cold, I don't hear it until it warms up. I hear it at idle and when under load. Sound is a constant whistle...almost like a supercharger whine. I have no problems with my charging system, never had a dead battery, so it seems its working properly. Do you think it might be the pulley or maybe the alternator on its way out?

The 2nd whistle just started today. I can hear it when I rev the engine as well as under load. Since I hear it when I rev the engine while in neutral, I am thinking it's an exhaust leak coming from the down pipe and midpipe flanges. It seems to get louder as I rev or accelerate. I have never experienced an exhaust leak in this car, so I am uncertain of how it sounds. In other cars I've owned, its usually a ticking sound.

Anyone have an idea? My car is an 05 MT, 24K miles, GReddy turbo recently installed. Thanks for reading!

the one in the engine bay might be your air pump. mine turns on when i start it cold, then turns off in a few seconds.

I thought that, but it never turns off. Always has a constant whine. Seems to be getting louder too. :(

"GReddy turbo recently installed"

That to me means, I would start checking every single connection that was touched, moved, or added during this whole install.

As far as today's noise..................:dunno: Will it do it in neutral and can you get under there and try to locate it, or see if any bolts are loose? Goes without saying I hope, that you really need to be careful doing this for several reasons.

The alternator whine was doing it before the turbo install, so it can't be anything to do with that. At a local meet a few months prior I noticed it, but didn't think anything of it. Now it's just getting annoying. Guess I could replace it and see if it helps....

The other noise...does it in neutral only if I rev it. So by pushing more air thru the exhaust I hear it, which leads me to believe its an exhaust leak. It sounds like it's coming from the passenger side floor up front. That is exactly where the midpipe bolts to the down pipe. I got it on jackstands today and tightened the bolts more. They were super tight already. I am going to try replaceing that gasket tomorrow and see if thats what the problem is. I guess if it doesn't than at least it will eliminate that possibility. I doubt it has anything to do with the turbo since I hear it when not under load. I'll update tomorrow....:eyetwitch

Remove girlfriend from passenger seat before take off. That should eliminate one of the whining noises.

Sorry I couldn't resist.

hahaha, I was wondering when that was coming
