1st Post ! Loss Of Power on Top End?

First I want to thank everyone for there posts. The board has been a great help.

My Story:

I have a 2004 with just about 71k. In the last year and a half I have had no problems at all. Nothing but routine maintenance and a set of tires.

I was driving home the other day and pop a CEL. I figure I can drive back to work the next am and after a nice highway run (85mph) i get to light and WAM she begins to shudder and stalls. (you know the noise it makes) The CEL starts to blink. I start her up and she barely makes it to my store. Like 100 feet.

I get on RX8 Club and read read read... I change my coils packs and Plugs. They were so fouled. I try to start her up and no start so i read and read some more and figure she is flooded. So i follow the DIY and bam she starts (what a good girl LOL )

I go to Auto Zone and have them read my codes I have 2 P0301, which I am sure the coils and plugs fixed.

I also have a P0037 which says sensor heater circuit low - bank 1 sensor 2, open or short circuit condition, open fuse, failed heated O2 sensor bank 1 sensor 2. (HO2S12)

Could this have been caused by my the engine misfire. The P0037 code?

So My question I have a loss of power now at top end and the exhaust note I think changed. When driving at 75 it has no UMPH.... Just doesn't want to go anymore.

Any Help would be appreciated. There is only 1 Mazda store in my city and don't want to go to them until I have too.

Did you reset your ECU after changing the coils and plugs?

Jewbin 09-29-2009 02:14 PM

I have not reset the light yet And how do I reset the ECU?

There are two ways. One saves your radio settings the other does not. The first way is you do a series of steps with your trip meter. You can find them if you search something like, "ECU reset". The easiest way is the second which is to unplug your battery. After unplugging, turn on your headlights to help drain the internal capacitors quicker. I usually leave mine unplugged for at least 10 - 15mins, but it should take less time than that to be fully drained. The reason why I leave mine unplugged a bit longer is because I unplugged it for 5 minutes one time and it still had juice in the capacitors so the ECU hadn't reset. So since then I leave it off longer just to make sure.

Ok!

So i disconnect battery. I let it sit for like 10 mins with lights one. I start the car and the flashing TCS is on but the CEL is off. So i let it warm up and then shut it down and do the turn wheel to both sides and then turn car on and the Flashing TCS light is off and the CEL is back ON LOL OMG I think she is mad at me. Any Ideas?

Have you checked the cat yet?
A clogged cat would explain the loss of power at high RPMs and also the P0037 code.

Jewbin 09-29-2009 07:44 PM

I have not checked the cat! Now that would be crappy!!!! Any quick fixes for that?

nycgps 09-29-2009 07:50 PM

no quick fix

take the cat apart and look at it.

I know he disconnected the battery for 10 minutes, but I still think it might be worth him doing the 20 brake tap ECU reset........just to see.
Turn the key to the on position, tap the brake pedal really fast(about 20 times) until the oil gauge sweeps to the right and back to the left, then turn the car off, wait 20 seconds, start it, and go for a drive. See how fast that CEL pops back on.
If it does come back on, go get the code read again and like was already stated........might be time to take the CAT loose or off and look inside!

Do you kn ow if the cat is covered to 100K

alz0rz 09-29-2009 08:09 PM

in the US the cat is covered by a federal emissions warranty until 80,000 miles.

alz0rz 09-29-2009 09:30 PM

it's 96 months and/or 80,000 miles.

OK so I tried the brake pedal trick and the light wont turn off. I guess I'm going to have to go and get it turned off. Boy this is starting to make me concerned. I also still have loss of power sporadically now at top end.

Thanks

jeff
