04 RX8 no start after battery replacement

Guys, need your help. New to the Forum and having an issue I didn't expect. 2004 RX8 battery died. Jumped it off, drove it home (ran fine) and replaced the battery. Now it cranks but won't start. Didn't see any special procedures for battery replacement here or anywhere else. I have no idea why this would happen on this car. Replaced 100's of batteries in the past (20 yr auto tech vet) and never seen this before. Am I missing something? I know about the flooding problem where you start it, shut it off after only a minute or two without letting it get warm and try to restart. Not really acting like that.
Thanks - appreciate any advice.

look up the De-flooding procedure

Also, might be worth performing the ESS profile reset, since the battery was removed.

How old are the plugs, wires and ignition coils on the car?

BC.

I also think it's flooded... Try cleaning the terminals, sometimes the negative terminal where the EPS fuse is also located become loose and fails to have a closed circuit connection. If you own a manual transmission, do the pull/push-start at second gear then drop the clutch at around 8 mph; the ESS reset isn't really necessary but what bladecutter mentioned about the ignition have to be considered; and lastly, have you upgraded from the OEM starter, how about the alternator?

Tested alternator before shutting off the last time before battery replacement, 34 amps @ 13.8 v. Rechecked neg cable, everything tight and clean, I'm starting to think it is a flooding problem again as well, but I don't see how I did it so quickly. New plugs, wires and coils were same it had when I bought it (two years, so who knows) but when it runs it runs good. Auto trans. ESS procedure looks interesting...Is the de-flooding procedure on a thread somewhere here?
Thanks all. Still tinkering with it.
