Won't start, security light flashes

This evening -- first experience in near-freezing temperature -- the RX8 started then died. Since then the red security light has been flashing and car won't start. Manual says, if it does this and you have your proper key, call your dealer! We're 600 miles from home! Hope to find dealer in the morning. Any experience or bright ideas? Gotta be home Sunday evening. Bright ideas welcome. Thanks.

It's a 6spGT.

Try your second regular key and/or the valet key if you have access to them.

Ouch that sucks!

I know that when my key is out, the red security light flashes.

Maybe it wasn't coded properly from the factory?

GRRRRRRRR! Call you dealer, be calm, and demand a Mazdaspeed body kit for your inconvenience ;)

Or just call them and tell them your problem, I'm sure they will fix it!!!!

Keep us posted on the progress!

Have you called Mazda's Roadside Assistance number yet? The service comes free with the vehicle - may as well use it!

Thanks -- We tried the second key and same result. (Valet key is in my office.) Tried unlocking with key instead of the electronic system; holding it in ON for 10 seconds (supposed to cycle the immobilizer off) before starting. Tried hitting the emergency button, etc. etc. Engine cranks but won't start, I ASSUME that the immobilizer cuts off fuel. But could be another issue and the security light just flashing ....

Next decision is whether to call the 800 number now or in the morning. Guess we'll do it now; just came up to see if anyone had a bright idea we haven't tried. Will keep ya posted how the Mazda dealer in Ypsilanti, MI (we're in Ann Arbor tonight) handles this.

search for the key recode procedure... or new "cool key" thread (the jap key that looks cool)

someone posted a way to do the adaptation for a while before dealer intervention.

Hope that helps a bit!

Now in dealer's hands

Called roadside assistance. Tow truck was here in 15-20 minutes; was courteous and careful but it breaks your heart. Left car at SESI Lincoln Mercury / Mazda in Ypsilanti, MI with a note. Hope they have a clue but just in case will look for that recode thread. Will keep ya posted.

Flooding problem?

Thanks, but my present theory is that it's the infamous flooding problem -- I'd forgotten that I briefly moved the car Thursday morning. There's hope IF the one and only Mazda tech comes to work at the local Lincoln-Mercury-(Mazda) dealer ....

shebam 11-29-2003 09:05 AM

It was flooded! Sorry for this thread, but the flashing immobilizer warning light led me astray. The dealer finally got it started with the hold-down-the-accelerator-for-10-seconds technique. Shows the dangers of (1) not reading the threads about problems you have not experienced (yet), and (2) jumping to conclusions. thanks to all for the suggestions and sympathy.
