Who likes Amsoil better than Royal Purple?
 

Ok, I've done a search and a couple of you are using Royal Purple. Have you tried Amsoil? And compared it to Royal Purple? or Redline? I've heard a lot of good things with Amsoil (esp. from the Audi drivers) and the Amsoil 5-20 meets the requirements for the RX8. Anyone hook on Amsoil for their RX8?

I've been using Royal Purple 5w30 in the engine for quite awhile, 75w90 in the trans & diff. :cool:

It works great, the engine is smooth, burns a little less oil than dino. My trans shifts like silk and when idling with the car in netural the trans is quiet, compared to the stock gear oil, my diff hops a little less on kick ass starts so, I sleep well at night knowing I've given my 8 the best of care. :)

The motor oil is API, SL GF-3 rated, just what Mazda requires in a motor oil and the gear oil is GF-4 & GF-5 rated with a limited slip diff additive built into the oil.

Royal Purple is also recommended by Racing Beat and their engineers as being a good synthetic for the RX-8 and have dynoed the oil in a RX-8, only to be surprised to see that it actually gives more HP!! :eek:

Been using AMSOIL XL-7500 for over 20K miles. I've used Amsoil products in my RX-7 for 150K miles. AMSOIL and Royal Purple are both very good synthetics.

My personal rotary mechanic says Amsoil is the best. He has built many a rotary in his life. I'm still burning dino 5W20, at least until the free maintenance is up.

just want to make sure i dont get the wrong oil. . . .you said 5w30? and 75w90? i thought mazda recommended 5w20
the tranny noise in neutral is really getting on my nerves also. . .so i will thank you in advance letting me know how to reduce it!!!!

I had big engine problems, due to lubrication, using Amsoil in my new 1982 Plymouth Sapporo. It was my first new car. I will never use it again.

My only experience with Amsoil was in our 600RRs(2006 & 2007). They both use a wet clutch. The result was very sticky shifts that felt like shit. If I hadn't changed the oil myself or known it was Amsoil I would have been under the impression someone just put O'reilly branded automotive oil in our bikes.
Bottom line: waste of money.

Honda 10W-40 at ~$4/quart shifts like butter.

You have to take that into context. Interest rates were sky high at that time. Inflation was rampant. I bought a home a year earlier. Home loan interest rate was at 18+%. I took over the previous owners loan @ 12.5%.

Yeah interest rates are great right now. Just bought my second home under 4%. Doubt we'll see that again!

It had a speedo that topped out at 80. It went beyond that.

If I remember correctly from reading and talking to folks, only born in 79, prices on homes and goods were far less than today per the average wage even during the inflation period. For instance a person may make $25,000 a year, but the average national price on a new home was $30,000. Versus now, with home prices through the roof. This was especially true in rural areas. Today the cost of farm machinery or farm land is astronomical. The same was for cars than versus now. Am I too far off on that Al?

Speaking of inflation, get to know some Brazilians and learn about the hyper inflation they went through. It's crazy what they experienced.

I make 4X today than I did then. The price for the house (a small 1940's 3 br ranch) was about $80k. Today, on Zillow.com, it show it's worth 101K.

I guess that means I'm way off base.

And to stay on topic, I use amsoil in my FD, I used it in my old miata and tried it in my 8. I like it mostly for the Diff and Transmission, but when I put it in my RX8 trans I started to get the 1 - 2 grind. It shifted like butter other than under hard acceleration and I think a lot to do with my problem is my master/slave. The redline just masks the issue better. I had to replace the master and I think the slave may be bad as well. However, I'll just stick with readline instead of wasting money again.
