History of the Rotary

Cool book - I have it in hardcover. While not technically deep, it's a pretty good read.

da96boss 05-15-2007 04:25 PM

Wow...theres some fairly rude people on this forum...it almost wants to make me stay away from rotorys...well that and also i like the power of a v-8 :-) where $2k can get you a good 100 hp gain (just about)...besides all he did was just ask what he can get for 2 grand!

VASasha 05-15-2007 05:08 PM

It's becoming apparant that most of the trolls reside on the forum. Nobody is twisting anybody's arm to post replies. I'm sure that if this post was as big an issue as some are making it out to be, then surely mods would delete threads like this. Afterall, this is a forum. Let it be one and if somebody wants to ask a question that has been answered many times, let them. No reason to be rude about it.

bikes2cars 05-15-2007 05:11 PM

For $2k, I'd get sway bars and nice, adjustable, coilovers.

Ditto!

Now, I may be a newbie here (thanks to my RX-8), but I'm a veteran on other forums (Car&Driver, for one). I thought that trolls on other forums were pretty bad, but this forum is just as bad, if not worse. At least trolls on other forums can be quite amusing and entertaining...

I appreciate the remarks, the people that did respond as desired were a big help

and I should be posting my recommendations for my friend in the next day or so

as I'm still trying to make up my mind. Plus life is a little upside down at the moment.

But thanks for understanding, still doesn't make my out burst the best way to

handled it.

No troll here really, that term always puzzles me as were all trolling for answers in one way or another.

If your really interested I'll let you know what I come up with. I'm still trying to make up my mind.

I talked to Mike at RB today, he helped me out alot, nice guy. Agency and Borla Im still trying to get ahold of.

Want to talk to a few other also. So when my current condition allows it I'll get it done.

And hopefully my friend will be happy.

all the people at rb are named jim...

and they give you there last name.. it is the jim factor..

cant wait to hear you report on power upgrades for the rx8.

might be sticky..

Rx8urZ 05-20-2007 03:41 AM

just save up another 3k and get the greddy turbo kit. so 5k should be enough buy the kit and get a good tune....

DanRedRx8 05-20-2007 06:04 PM

how bought just tinkering with the car and not worrying about the hp gain?

clear corners
Revi Rb air intake with dam
new ignition coils ( they will go eventually ) new wires
a UR or AP pulley kit
an exhuast.... i dont know which one since you dont want it loud but im sure there are suggestions
ACT clutch and flywheel combo.... that would be fun to install!
tranny fluid

All those would be fun to install for you two guys and you can get a better understanding for the rotary engine.

just have fun modding your car.... i wouldnt worry about the hp gains.... the rx8 is already a blast to drive

Go48 05-20-2007 06:37 PM

Go to RacingBeat.com and read what they have to say about getting more HP out of the RX-8. You may be surprised.

SoFL_RX8 05-21-2007 10:47 AM

$2000?

$300 for the racing beat reflash
$700 for a ZEX wet system with all the goodies (55 shot as per Charles R. Hill)
$385 ACT Prolite flywheel (shipped)
$600 TEIN Basic Coilovers (shipped)
$43 K&N Drop in air filter

Thats just slightly over 2K, without the filter slightly under. That group of mods, in my oppinion, will yeild you the most performance gains for $2000.

Good luck. Dont be afraid of Nitrous, just do your homework.

You mentioned you are interested in doing intake/exhaust mods. There isn't much improvement to be found in chainging these components. Search around and you'll see that your looking at nominal, negligible or non-existant gains. The stock components are very well sorted.

I am closing in on my 3rd month of RX8 ownership. I have a modest budget for mods. I'll list the mod and the reason(s), I'm doing them. Hopefully it will prove helpful. You'll see I'm not spending much on power mods as it takes a huge investment to get anywhere significant. Your better off investing in the suspension as you can make some worthwhile improvements there without breaking the bank. I also bought the lotek gauge pod and prosport oil temp, water temp and oil pressure gauges. The $250.00 investment is worthwhile IMO as you can keep on top of your cars health, especially at hot summer track days.

Motor/Drivetrain

1) Agency Power Underdrive Pulley: The main reason I bought this is that it helps with water pump cavitation improving cooling at high rpms and hot track days. I have yet to install, its sitting in a box next to me right now. It may also net some negligible performance gains, but I'm not anticipating much.

$100.00

2) Racing Beat Street Flash: I'm on the fence on this one as I'm awaiting the release of the Access Port. That said, the reason I was planning on the flash is the lower temperature on/off of the cooling fans along with some modest performance increases (again pretty negligible). The mazport cooling mod costs about half of the racing beat flash and improves cooling in much the same way. The flash only costs $150.00 more and offers some slight increases in performance. To me it seems worth it. Again, I'm not expect much of a noticeable difference.

$350.00 with shipping

Both of the above made sense to me because they provide a sort of double benefit: Improving cooling and modest performance gains.

Eventually, I'd like to a lightweight flywheel. The gains are probably the best for the money, but the install is difficult or costly if done by a professional.

$800.00-$1000.00 including install

Suspension:

Dampers: I'm thinking either koni's or Tokico D-specs. Either will help with the underdamped rear suspension along with generally improving the already exceptional handling of the car.

$500.00-$600.00

Springs: Still haven't picked a set, but there are some good deals to be had on either tein h-tech or s-tech springs. I don't want to go too stiff as the 8 is my daily driver and the roads in NE are terrible.

$150.00 - $200.00

I've settled on not doing threaded body (ride height adjustable) coilovers as the tein basics (the only one's in my price range) don't offer adjustable damping. It would be nice to get corner weighted perfectly though with them.

Sway Bars:

Haven't really settled on anything yet. Thinking racing beat front and rear with endlinks:

$500.00

Wheels and Tires:

I'd love to do a set of 9.5" wide Enkei RPF1s, but that will cost around $1300.00. Its not in the budget right now.

Tires:

Falken Azenis RT-615 or Kumho Ecsta MX. I have to decide how little tread life I'm willing to live with. With stock rims, I'm planning on doing 235/40/18, as its a good trade off between a slight increase in width without compromising sidewall stiffness (like some have said 245s do).

$700.00

Without the Enkei wheels, the total is under 3k for all of the above. This became a much longer post than I initially intended, but I was having fun thinking about my car/mods.

This guy has done his homework and has a very sensible plan on how to mod the car efficiently. I personally think he might as well take the 2000 and invest it in his business or go trade in for a 350Z cause he's flushing it right down the toilet putting bolt ons on the car and expecting 50 hp if just wants straight line power but no handling improvement.

I would get a set of lightweight first gen SSR comps with a lighter tire and save some pounds on rotating mass at each corner. It won't add hp but it will make the car accelerate a bit faster.

So I ask the simple question just to get a few opinions, and this turns into me being lazy. Looking at this forum till 2am last night isn't exactly what I'd call lazy.

I've done research which I always do on any forum, on any sublject before I even decide if I'm going to join the forum, so I can post a question.

I've looked at this forum for I don't know how long, and just decided last night that it's time to get a few opinions. So I joined, asked the question, all so I could be accused of making YOU PEOPLE MY BITCH, and then be called LAZY!!!

F#@K YOU!!!

I'm the guy who's waisted his time.

I'll be sure to let my friend know, he shouldn't have bought a car that is so delicate, that the people who think so highly of them are to afraid to give any good opinions on what mods to do first.

Save for a good few.

Dont give us that *I did my research* kind of bullshit.

If u did u wouldnt even ask such dumbshit question in the first place.

u need to get laid, and ask ur mommy to re-teach u proper manner.

rotaryfan2 05-28-2007 12:07 AM

Sorry its taken longer to do this than I intended, but I got laid up again and it just couldn't be helped.

I appreciate everyone who had friendly input, and I took everyones suggestions under consideration. Well I didn't, but I made sure my friend did.

The bottom line is that there are many differant combinations of things that he can do to his car with respect to bolt ons, and what you use from what manufacturer.

With that said, I'll just keep it short, and sweet when it comes to the money part of the equation, he is probabley looking at spending in the neighborhood of $100
per horsepower. That came as a bit of a shock to him, but based on everything I see here, and looking at other sites it will be at least that in some cases.

He was hoping for a little better return than that, and based on his initial reaction I expect he'll just leave that car as is. But thats the jist of it anyway.

That pretty much does it for me. I'm headed to bed, I had surgery Thursday, and I'm tired. I was going to put this off but walking by the computer got me thinkin.

So see ya around.

It was fun for a little while.

Hasta la vista.................

mikeferz42 05-28-2007 01:06 AM

you're not really going to understand a rotary engine by adding bolt ons. since he doesn't want to spend the money any more, which is the best idea, you guys can just clean your spark plugs, for example. you will understand a rotary engine more by doing that than adding any bolt ons. the bolt ons described in earlier posts are exactly how you would "bolt it on" on a piston engine.

as for how you were treated on this thread, keep your head up. reading threads like this is the reason why i hesistate to start a new one. this is the most knowledgeable forum i've been a part of but is also the most unwelcoming to new members. 80% of members are helpful and considerate though.
