What are these?

I just bought the RX-8 and I have found two things in the car that doesn't make sense to me. Maybe someone can help me out?

The first one, the bracket looking thing, was found under my clutch pedal. It probably just fell from somewhere and got kicked there.

The second thing, the cylinder looking thing, was held behind the glove box. It was held by a stud, and apparently the ring on it broke.

Also, I have a 2004 GT, so it's got Bose, but I can only find 6 speakers. I thought there are 9?

The first one looks like one of the seat bolt covers. The second one I think is the glove box opener dampner. Someone else will have to tell you for sure.

There are a center channel speaker, the speakers in the side mirror pods, the two in the front door panels. Then two pairs of speakers (meaning two on each side making four) in the rear shelf so that makes nine speakers total.

OK I will try to see if that cover is for the seatbelt.

glove box damper? If that really is...it would be very interesting to know how it works..

I didn't realize there are two pairs in the rear shelf. I guess I didn't look hard enough, and what's the point of having 4 speakers so close to each other...

Where is the center channel speaker located?

Not the seat belt, the front seat runner at the back. Covers the end so back seat passengers wont cut their shoe or something getting in. Mine came off and I was wondering the same thing?

Center channel should be in the middle of your windshield on the dash?

That second one is definitely one of the glove box dampeners.

OK I just realized the hanging part of that damper actually moves up and down. I guess I will epoxy the broken ring and put it back to where it came from.

I can't find the seat runner to put that bracket on. Is there supposed to be a bracket for every rail? Sear runner = seat rails right?

Forget that epoxy! Get a new dampener. About $11. #21 in the illustration I believe.

What does it dampen? Noise?

Keeps the glovebox from dropping like a brick when you open it...kinda nice to have but I've lived without mine for a year now.

The first item fits over the end of the drivers seat rail closest to the door. just slides on and snaps into place. It looks like the front one, not the back. Whichever one is missing, that's it.

The second item is indeed the glove box damper and keeps it from juts flopping all the way open when you unlatch it.

maxchao 04-21-2011 05:50 PM

Yup I got the seat rail cover on there. Interesting....I miss all four of them (or two?). The previous owner isn't a very careful one...I even found an used straw while I was doing that...

I will get the damper from some part out I guess...I just found a broken sunroof deflector link...

I wonder how many things I will have to fix...oh well the life of buying used car lol

my glove box damper broke years ago, bought a replacement and it broke again. Now i just make sure i dont open and let go of my glove box.

nycgps 04-21-2011 07:56 PM

mine broke long time ago too. I brought the replacement but never bother to put it in. It has been like this for the past 2 yrs or so

A little thread resurrection here...

My glove box damper finally broke after 6 years, when I had the glove box half way out and it kind of just fell down from the weight of the items inside it.

Anyway, can someone tell me how the cylinder/damper piece attaches up inside the dash? I will order a replacement soon, and I'm aware the you can pop it back in without taking the entire dash apart like the Mazda procedure says. However I'm not quite sure how it connects.

Thanks in advance!

^^^
It attaches to a "stub" that protrudes on the inside of the panel. I know, not a great discription.

That helps, thanks! I haven't even taken the old one out yet, and I'm assuming when I do I'll get a better idea how it attaches.
