what are some telltale signs that your clutch is slipping?
 

the past few days, my clutch has been acting different than what it has been doing since I got it in November. clutch engagement point seems to be higher, and for certain speeds in certain gears, the engine seems to rev an extra 100-200 rpm higher than what I remembered. That's just some observations, but what are some very noticeable signs that your car's clutch is about to wear out???

while we're on the topic of clutch, just so I know, what's Mazda warranty coverage on the clutch??

down shift from speed and if u don't feel any drag or slowing down from the downshift.... then ur clutch maybe slipping... but i doubt ur at that stage cauase my friend's S4's clutch is sooo worn out that it feels like the engine is free spinning when he does a downshift to slow down... and his car still starts and moves....

Cruise at a steady speed and then punch the gas. If the clutch slips you will see on the tach the RPMs will suddenly increase (much more so than you would expect from normal acceleration). The effect is more pronounced when going up a hill -- that's usually when you'll first notice.

A couple hundred RPM is negligible enough that you can't be certian what's going on. If you really want to test your clutch then from a stop shift into first and once you feel the clutch engaged go WOT. If the RPMs spike up but you don't feel a corresponding acceleration then the clutch is slipping. Usually that will be accompanied a short while later by the smell of an overheated friction disk.

Clutches are like tires--they're considered wear components and aren't covered by warranty unless something unusual happens.

geez..... i had my clutch replaced twice already.First like PUR NRG said "unless something happens" which happened to me they said the factory didnt torqe it right or something like that.Second was my fault. I knew the clutch was slippin when i had to gas it more on the hill when coming outta 1st gear. But know i have a new clutch and ohhhh myy what a difference it feels so good.But i guess it probably i didnt have my car for over a month

Although a clutch disk is as PUR NRG states, a wearable item, they still can be covered under warrantee without any sort of "incorrect install" or something like that.

Mazda will usually replace a clutch if it goes out prior to putting 12,000 miles on the car/clutch, as this is considered "premature wear", a couple of different dealership have quoted this as a sort of formal "threshold". If the clutch disk is "burnt", though, they'll assume its been abused. If your car doesn't have that many miles on it, go into the service department and see what their policy is. Throw up a stink, and throw around terms such as "premature wear" and see what happens. I had my 350z's clutch replaced under warrantee, although it only had 8,000 miles, and I didn't race it or drive it too hard.

Talk to the service departmet at your dealership, worst thing they can say is no.

put it in a high gear and release the clutch from a stop. if the engine stalls right away its not slipping. how many miles do you have on your car? i am having issues with my clutch and mentioned in other threads my situation. i am seeing legal representation to get my clutch fixed. take it to your dealer and if you have trouble let us know. do a search for clutch problems on here. i printed out 28+ pages of complaints about the clutch, tranny and the way they are being treated my the dealerships. good luck

thanks for the advice guys, i'm gonna drive it around a bit more to see if the symptons get worse, and try out some of the techniques to determine if the clutch is slipping. it'll be a few more weeks before I contact the dealer anyway, i want the weather to get a bit nicer before taking it in for a look.
