what does it take for Mazda to replace an engine ???
 

I'm sorta getting a bit pissed at this...

I paid for an engine compression test early last week as my extended engine warranty is about to expire. The engine tested out on both rotors between 5.7 and 6.0 at 238 rpm. According to all of the charts posted around here that is failing.

The dealer is saying MNAO is saying its "marginal" and according to the dealer they told them the min at that rpm is 6.0. The then started a full battery of tests that I did not authorize and not sure if I'm paying for. They tested that cat and thankfully it passed or I would be buying a new one. Then they checked for misfires and claimed it was missing badly (no CEO was ever tripped though for misfires) because my aftermarket bhr coils were bad. They refused to do anything else until the coils were replaced with Mazda coils at my expense. I tried to get them to explain what the hell coils had to do with having low compression but they had no answers other then "dont shoot the messanger" .

So now I just got done buying and installing the new coils myself as they were trying to rock me for over $500 to do the job. I have to take it back to the dealer so they can start the testing all over again, then do a decarb, redo the compression test, and try to rape me for something else.... And be without my car for another week

It seems like we have an extended warranty that Mazda wishes to try and suck all the money out of your pockets before they will honor it.

I got tired of waiting for them to replace mine.......and a few others have as well

Get your oil change reciepts in order,,,and throe in a set of OEM coils and cross your fingers

Usually they won't replace it without a hot start or driveability issues even if the compression is low

Show all oil change receipts and put everything in a stock mode (no modifications whatsoever). You'll be glad you did.

They're just doing their job. cuz honestly if I'm Mazda there is no way that I want to warranty anyone's car when it's loaded with mods.

and dealership plays a big role in engine replacements.

For me, they didn't ask anything, my car is as stock as possible with the exception of Mazdaspeed intake at that time (now sold) they probably know that I'm an oil changing freak so they never bother to ask me for my receipts.

Nice to hear some good news for a change.

How strict are they on oil change receipts? I have a bunch, but I'm also missing a few here and there. at 82k miles I'm facing hot start issues, poor idle, low MPG, and low power so I'm thinking I need to have the tests done (again, they were done way back at 50k ish miles at it was ok). I certainly can't prove that the oil has been changed every single 3k-5k miles, but I do have receipts for a majority of the oil changes.

BHR coils go bad??

Was that to me? I replaced with stock coils about 15k miles ago (and new plugs & wires), but it didn't make a difference. I've had a gradual decrease in performance over the past 20k miles or so.

Its an '04 and I've had it since new - went through all the reflashes, but who knows what damage was done in those first 20k miles.

If a new compression check doesn't come back out of spec, I'll go the seafoam/BHR route and see if that helps.

^Really to the OP. Or anyone. I was under the impression that those BHRs are more of a positive than a negative and pretty much outlive the car.

I know the BHR coils have survived dealership trips. One of our locals just got an engine replacement in her 2007 GT with them on, but it's a crap shoot depending on the dealer I'd say. To be safe most mods should be removed, it's not worth the risk of being denied IMO.

some dealerships who are familiar with the ignition setup have no issues with them but you can't blame Mazda techs for doing their job.
They don't spend all day on these forums and some wouldn't know the difference between a BHR ignition and some cheaply made chinese ebay special that could be detrimental to the motor. All they know is that it is not OEM and could be the cause of an issue so they will ask that OEM parts be used.

This is why it's usually a best practice to take the car in with OEM parts and to make sure to KEEP oem parts when upgrading things like the ignition should you ever need to revert back to stock.

I'm definitely going to take it in all stock to be safe. Anyone have any experience with the oil change receipts though? Like I said, I have a bunch, but its not a perfect record - do they allow for some lost receipts over the course of 7 years of ownership?

Hit or miss as well. My first time they didn't ask for shit, the second time they (same service rep) wanted all the receipts, said . I have heard of some places asking for 7-10 receipts. It's also teh same for a rental, I never had a problem getting one but some dealers refuse to offer a rental. But this is what the warranty says.

they typically only require the last 3 to 4 receipts at minnimum. You don't need ALL of them.
I doubt they inspect close enough that if you sent them a STACK of invoices that they'd notice gaps here and there over 7 years.

In addition, you don't technically need receipts, just a maintenance record as outlined in the warranty paper.

I'm having trouble with hot starts, there is an oil leak somewhere, getting horrible gas mileage, and idle is rough sometimes. Except when I called Mazda they said they can only replace it if the engine literally "won't start". They want it to be towed in essentially. It is such bullshit.
They said it would be $225 just to get it in there and looked at. I've owned my RX8 for only 2 months and already want to get rid of it because I had no idea what I was getting into.
I'm sure the engine will go out sometime in the next couple thousand miles. Too bad Mazda won't stand behind their engine, eh? Complete BS. I cannot believe that they still want to sell cars with Rotary engines.

Mazda wants to stand behind it, but sadly most dealerships are loaded with morons, and morons are always afraid of dealing with stuff they know nothing about, most of them can barely replace a brake pad. you expect them to replace an engine ?

This is why most of them are afraid of working on Rotary engine related cars.

Is there a way that Mazda USA/Global can intervene in this case?

I cannot find any literature/statements in the owners manual or online that will describe the explicit conditions that need to be met for a engine transplant to take place. If it is treated as a legal document they cannot refuse the warranty.

Get rid of the P.O.S.!!!!! I had mine replaced at 114000 miles and the reman has 26000 miles on it and it blew last night... The engines are crap!!!!!!! Just be prepared for a whole lot of issues if you get them to replace....
