What are the differences 4 port - 6 port

So if you took a 4 port and 6 port renesis and stripped them all the way down, what would be the difference (obviously physically there are 2 more ports?) but the all the seals (apex, corner, side etc), the rotors etc are they different peices? or is it just the rotor housings themselves with physical differences.

the reason I am asking is there a 4 port auto close by that is being parted out and the guy just wants the stuff gone, i was curious if enough of the motor is similar that it could be a viable source of spare parts (especially considering the motor trouble I am having currently)

the rotors, rotor housings, and seals are the same. the eccentric shaft might be the same, except it needs the pilot bearing.

you also get the a/t counterweight, which is nice makes it easy to do a flywheel later.

the irons are different. the stationary gears are different.

intakes are different, exhaust manifold is the same.

oil pump/front cover/waterpump/oil pan is the same.

Thank you, very informative

eccentric shafts are different, the standard power (4 port) isnt balanced to the same specs as a high power (6 ports) shaft is. dimensionally though they are identical.

correct on counterweight, pretty valuable part there especially if you plan to go lightweight flywheel later youll have the weight.

all irons are different (front, middle, rear), gears are the same but the bearings are different (replaceable mind you)

upper and lower manifolds are different as well yes, exhaust manifold is the same also

all those parts are the same as well. but depending on the issues you are having, it may not be completely helpful to you

I've got a failed oil control ring and I'm kind of in a pickle, is my only car (single parent have to get to work, get the kid to school, pick him up from daycare etc) and unfortunately it caught me in the middle of some serious financial issues where the idea of a reman is miles outside the realm of possibility so the way I see it is two options

A) I find someone parting out an 8, get the block for cheap, strip down it and mine, Frankenstein the engine using the best parts from each

B) get the seal kit, rebuild from the ground up BUT that would mean no spare parts, if I get it apart and the rotors or housings are damaged I will just have to grin and bare then reassemble knowing I will have to have i do it again

Buy a $1000 beater and save the rx8 when your financial hardship is over.

+1 to the above, but ONLY IF parking is non issue(if u have a garage),

Otherwise, part out might be ur only option

i agree with them.. and then if you have the skills to do it, just buy new seals and rebuild it. youll need all new seals and stuff during a rebuild anyways.. so need to Frankenstein motors, cause most of the parts in that other motor wont help you anyways.

He's facing financial struggles and has a kid to take care of. Please give him good advice!

A franken-rebuild won't last. He needs a dependable car, not an expendable one. The rebuild should include the seals, housings etc. He should contact Mazmart and call it a day

TheLastPriest 09-01-2013 11:26 AM

Well luckily I have a friend that said she would buy either or for me, looks like I'm leaning towards the seals, doing a full rebuild with them. I know its not the prettiest, and understanding that I drive 30 miles of mountain roads a day (so not a ton) expecting it to last 10k at best (hopefully enough time to dig myself out) has anyone tried the rotary aviation seal kits, I've heard good and bad here on 8club but the arguments seem to revolve not around their quality but their standing (outside obviously of the performance vehicle inner circle)

Thanks for all the help guys, doing the whole parenting thing alone can produce its own stress for sure, but that moment when you think you might fail your child produces a stress/depression unlike you've ever experienced.

*edit* I don't even have $1000 for a beater and with car payments on the 8 saving up would be a pain if possible at all, you don't need to tell me, I'm stupid for buying the 8, but what's done is done and finances looked a lot better at the time of purchase

Given your experience rebuilding engines you have 2 options:
Buy a beater and sell the rx8
Have somebody build the engine for you.

There are so many things that can go wrong and bad things that you can find with the engine down...

TheLastPriest 09-01-2013 01:20 PM

I have to be honest, I am contemplating trading it in for a wrx or ego,, if money were no object the thought wouldn't even cross my mind. Buy with work and a kid to worry about, I may not be doing the right thing clutching on to my beloved rotary

TheLastPriest 09-01-2013 03:33 PM

Ehhh, I'm upside down, back to only option, rebuild

nycgps 09-01-2013 06:45 PM

dont do the rebuild ... if all ur doing is just rebuild kit ... u gonna have a shitty engine ...

TheLastPriest 09-02-2013 01:53 PM

I know, another bad example for the rotary community, the last thing it needs, but in this case personal needs come before community. And what other choice do I have
