Went to GUT my cat and find this? wtf? Pic

Ok so my cel stated cat was clogged,
i already suspected it was due to lack of power / bogging etc.

So i go to gut the cat and wtf?
there aint nothing in it?

No honey comb or anything.

is this what a stock cat looks like?
i presume it's stock as my car aint loud at all.

Is it possible my mufflers are clogged?

when i sea foamed more smoke came out of 1 pipe then the other,
im talking a lot from 1, and very little from other.

I figured it was also from that cat?

ShinkaEvo 10-11-2011 12:26 AM

lol, already burned, there should be a honey comb filter inside the cat, which means your catback might be clogged...

04RX8TX 10-11-2011 12:36 AM

lol...

Ok well then i am sure the mufflers clogged.
If it melt the honey comb to non-existent lol.

So looks like tomorrow i will head to exhaust shop. and will no longer have dual pipes.
going to run a cat-less pipe, with magnaflow muffler, and tip.

Will update with pics in the morning.

Dude, that looks like a cat-delete. Look how clean the inside is, just imagine, you think exhaust pressure or someone with a crowbar could do that? Take a picture of the whole exhaust pipe.

Would the heat/exhaust flow really be able to clear out the cat so cleanly?

StealthTL 10-11-2011 02:57 AM

It's possible the material just cracked and fell to bits - it's a ceramic, when it fractures it keeps fracturing, and ends up in the muffler.

If you aren't the original owner I would have to say 'Grace' is right, and somebody got to it ahead of you.

04RX8TX 10-11-2011 03:02 AM

Yes,

But if some one gutted the cat could you explain why my 8 is just as quiet as stock?
has no rumble or anything.

Trust me i have watched plenty of gutted cat youtube videos.

I think all the honey comb bits are in my muffler, hence why the car is super quiet.
also explains how a shit load of smoke from 1 tail pipe, and hardly any from the other, when i sea foamed earlier today

Your car is still quiet because the stock muffler does its job really well. If your cat came apart on it's own, there's a good chance it's rattling around back there, and with the way flow is directed, I could see it clogging up your muffler a bit.

When i gutted my cat, it changed the tone, but not really the volume, and I run an HKS Hi-Power. About the only thing that got louder was the crackle and pop on decel and shifting.

Grace, mine is that clean. Once the honeycomb starts to crumble, it all pretty much falls apart and slides out. Any residual shit left over burns out after the first warmup pretty much. I had little embers blowing out of the tailpipe on my first drive.

Grace_Excel 10-11-2011 06:35 AM

Just can't believe how clean it looks! :Freak_ani

Did you disconnect the cat pipe before the seafoam process?

Atilla 10-11-2011 10:52 AM

nice midpipe :ugh2:

04RX8TX 10-11-2011 11:03 AM

i did not disconnect anything before i sea foamed.

TeamRX8 10-11-2011 11:33 AM

Then you likely did it. If you disconnect the pipe like you should you'll see that most of it is pumped out of the engine and onto the floor. When you don't it puddles up at the cat and autoignites when you crank up the engine which more than likely shatters a ceramic cat substrate.

There is no cel for a plugged cat. The cel is for excess emissions, which in your case was due to the cat substrate blowing out.

There are actually two substrates on an OE cat. One before and one after the rear O2 sensor. Now you need a new muffler too.

04RX8TX 10-11-2011 05:40 PM

8 Maniac 10-11-2011 06:32 PM

I can't say I think it looks good... glad it solved your problem, but I hope you plan on changing that in the future.

Chad D. 10-11-2011 06:46 PM

I'd be scraping that all over the place!

fuztupnz 10-11-2011 07:24 PM

That's what I was thinking about... I wouldn't be able to get into my apartment complex with that exhaust. My 8 at stock height used to scrape and I've seen stuff like an altima scrape. While I wouldn't say san antonio is the worst when it comes to roads, it wont be hard to find places where that exhaust will scrape. I'd be worried about it catching on stuff like more severe speed bumps and such...

dmedz8 10-12-2011 12:12 AM

It would be okay if it went through the rear rotor but It looks really out of place in its current location.

StealthTL 10-12-2011 01:00 AM

I'm not one to condone insults to a new member, BUT......

That resembles ass.
