Welded Diff options?
Sorry I tried searching but couldnt find much. I would really like to put a welded diff in my car. Are there any open diffs that fit our car, or did any of the AT's come with open diff? Thanks in advance.

Why would you want a welded Diff in your car :)
There is no situation in a car where that would be ideal.......... You can buy very nice 1.5 and 2 way LSD units that will effectively do similar..and still function properly |
I'm guessing you want welded for drifting?
Do as Dannobre said and look into 1.5 or 2 way lsd's. A welded diff will give you nothing but problems like broken axles and will be terrible for driving on the street. A welded diff makes the car extremely hard to turn. The only use for one is for off-roading, but even those guys stay away from it unless all they do is mud running or straight hill climbing. |

Better for what.....
It's not better at anything except breaking shit and making your car damn near undriveable on the street I had an ice racer that we did that in for a "chump car" type racing series...and it ripped itself apart after one race on ice.....imagine what that will do on the street... And when you break the diff...and likely axels and other bits....how much do you think that will cost??? I would think a proper LSD would start looking cheap by comparison |

There is nothing that makes a welded diff safe or driveable on the street.. And it is a ghetto fix for doing the right thing at best..... |

ive driven 240s with welded diffs no understeering it is trying to oversteer with the littlest steering imput

I feel when off power turn in the corner, locked would give me a bit of understeer, and open diff would give me a bit of oversteer. as you get on power its the opposite. thats why LSD is for. :ylsuper: |

it was just normal driving was trying to get used to my friends car at el mirage so i was getting a feel for how it was lol

what OEM is, and banter about under/oversteer is all beside the point. the point is, if for some reason you are going to do this, you'll likely have to figure it all out on your own. i doubt you'll find much support or help here for making such a dumb move

I guess I just assumed the stock diff was vlsd but either way it doesnt always lock up when I need it to. At least four of my friends daily drive on welded diffs a 240, miata, rx7 they all seem to have no problem, I only have a half mile drive everyday so im not really worried about it. I'm not trying to get into if its right or not just if there is anything I could possibly use.

you could gut the internals of the lsd and still weld it some people with fcs have done that to there turbo2 diff

LSDs dont "lock up", they transfer torque from one side to the other. some are very aggressive even transfer more torque to the outer wheel than welded diff. if you want loose rear end, put stiffer sway bar in the back |
i have to admit something here- i never even heard of this until this thread. so i did a little research.
its the stupidest thing ive ever heard of if you want to drive your car on the road ever. if you do it you will wreck your car and die on the highway. you got a family? think about it. plus you asking this and you didnt even know what you had already. go ask your friends that have theirs welded to help you. other wise go get get the 1.5 or 2 way. even better- use the money for some driving/drifting classes/lessons. |
Its your car, if you want to stick a welded diff in it,do it .I had an '85 Z28 BBC with a spool, it was fun to drive and never had a problem, but remember, it will step out in slippery conditions,and the DSC will not function effectively , its a shame they dont produce a Detroit Locker for the 8,
