weight reduction options
Ok so I am a college student which means I dont have money for performance parts, I have some just not big ones. The biggest I have is an AEM CAI. So I figure I could just work on making it a little bit lighter. Thats where the DIY comes in. Does anyone have ways to make my RX8 lighter that I can do myself. Does not matter how many I would have to do, lots of small ways is fine.
Thanks :) |
Take out all seats, interior pieces, AC, smaller battery, lighter rims, stereo, speakers, get a custom single pipe aluminum exhaust from manifold back.
The car is quite light from factory.. The seats don't weigh much. Depends how extreme you want to go. Also, the straight pipe exhaust will blow your eardrums. Not sure what else... |
You can strip all the items mentioned above.....still not going to lost THAT much weight.
If you start getting fancy (but very expensive)....you can start replacing body parts with lightweight examples. |
how heavy are you?
you can get the car down to 2800lbs and still have it pretty damn streetable. its just the question of how much do you want to spend. the best easiest gains would be a light weight single exit exhaust and lightweight rims. light weight racing seats, especially if you have leather. those 3 should net some pretty decent weight loss. and if you are over 180lbs, you better work on that. cause that weight loss is free. start running. |

Getting lightweight rims is going to do more for performance then gutting your cars interior, and it will look a lot better.
Have you considered a set of good tires also? Tires are the #1 most overlooked performance item. |
lightweight battery will take like 20-30lbs off right there.
lexan windows -30-40 lbs, carbonfiber trunk -10lbs remove front and rear low speed bumper bar (just don't get into an accident!) 30-40 lbs remove speakers & amp 20-30 All that with lighweight wheels and tires and an exhaust system will get you into the 2700s if you have the base model |

Yeah I have been looking at carbon hoods an trunks but yeah like I said I dont really have money so I will see what I can do...an no im 160 so i'm good there lol. And I have high speed tires. Once I get outta college and makin money i'll make it a monster.
Thanks all |
I would recommend a lightweight flywheel. Lower rotational weight is very important, which is why most people start off with wheels. The flywheel is not that expensive, but actually replacing it could be, depending on if you do it yourself or have a shop do it. It would definitely help your acceleration.

Go for the biggest chunk of metal, aka the 42 lb stock exhaust. Get the HKS single side, it only weighs 17 lbs.

Wikipedia is claiming that the S2 weighs 90lbs less than a S1. Is that so and if so, how?

Not exactly sure, but i think it is due to the lighter weight, lowered gearing, and improved suspension. To sum it up, it has lighter parts than before. |
hell no, they are stinking heavy compared to the S1, even the later S1s are heavier than the 04 & 05 models
wikipedia is based off of subjective input from individuals, somebody lied or is just plain wrong, my 05 is currently low 2700# with 5 gallons of fuel |

Just remove any part that opens, doors, hood trunk then cut the roof off and fit a roll cage. This is a miata but you get the idea.

I would look up some of your other exciting posts, but I'm too lazy. Something tells me there will be more to come though. Post on, my friend...Post on... |
