VFAD question?

Hi everyone,

I need an expert answer.

I was watching the Renenis Module 03 video.

"They mentioned the VFAD opens above 5500rmp to add another intake air path. Whem open it doubles the amount of air available to the engine and reduces restrictions."

"Is is not open all the times because because noise is also increased"

Did anyone removed it?
Any improvement?

Did a search and found this:

after market intakes are not compatable with the VFAD, at least all of them that I have seen. So they dont use it at all. Yes the noise is increased, but so far not much power has been shown to be gained with after market intakes.

Some people have also tried lowering the RPM at witch it opens.

The engine in the RX8 is pretty much as good as it can get, with-out going to some kind of forced induction or full on race motor. Even then, all the RX8 race cars ive seen that use the stock motor only have a high-flow exaust and intake (no VFAD) and a stand-alone ECU that is tuned to give them around ~260HP@???? RPM, found that out talking to the mechanich of one of the teams

EDIT : oops, looks like you already found that...

I played with the VFAD duct one day. I left it open full time and actually noticed a small decrease in low end power with no gains up top. It wasn't much of a loss and most people might not even care. If you leave it closed, you definitely notice a lack of top end power. There should be some potential to taking it completely off and replacing it with a ram air type of duct at higher speeds. As usual you will sacrifice a small amount of low end. I'm about to remove one to start playing with other inlet options. I'll let you know what I find out.

Did anybody remove this with there stock airbox? If so did you find a power loss at all? I'm just curious to know because i'd like to hear my intake more. Can't afford the REV-i right now.

And where is the VFAD? I'm guessing that i have to take off the bumper to remove it. Please correct me if i'm wrong. Thanks Alot.

It is behind the bumper. Here it is attached to the front of the airbox.

well i just took mine off at the shop the other day why i was fitting my new veilside replica front end, so far it drives about the same no real differance at all. but i hvae noticed that at about 7k i hear A WEEZ and then a rattle in the intake somewere along the line. i have been having runnig issues with this car for a lil while now so i guess taking the vfad off just helped me hear my unfortunate problem a lil more loudly.

I was looking into taking my VFAD off my 8. When I did it doidn't look anything like it does in the pics that i seen. It was just a piece of plastic at a right angle out of the air intake. Going into the sock which was a lot shorter than the one in the pics that I have seen

I think certain years or depending on the transmission, you don't have a vfad. I could be totally wrong.

It is an 04 AT, was think about putting an cold air intake and was wondering why was this way.
