I have owned a Bel RX65 since they came out!

It has worked OVER and OVER like a champ. Its range, functionality and price cannot be beat.

Has anyone ever wired a detector using the power that is going to the mirror?

Just curious... what metric are notches in? Is each notch worth about $15?

Thats one heck of a sales gimmick with the "Military Specs"... Does Harris Radios make them?

What MIL-Spec do they conform to? Are you referring to operating tolerences, etc? Where did you hear/read this?

They're in jail for speeding.

Because the only reason you would want the STi is if you lived in an area where radar detectors are illegal like Virginia, Washington D.C., some areas in Canada. The STi supposedly falses quite a bit on Ka band from other radar detectors because it is supposed to be used in areas where radar detectors are illegal. The Beltronics STi will cost you $450 but it still isn't as good as the Valentine One which will only cost you $399.

The Valentine One back in the day had six individual infrared laser photo diodes mounted on the laser board and facing the front of the car (two at an angle to obtain greater coverage).

The current Valentine One has a huge prismatic lens for laser detection that will alert almost 100% of the time when shot with laser from almost any distance.

By comparison, the brand new Beltronics STi which is about $450 uses what looks like only 4 individual infrared laser photo diodes as you can see at the top of the 3rd picture in the link below (5 Optical Laser Sensors according to their website) to detect laser.

It appears that Beltronics latest and greatest STi is using Valentine One's old laser detection technique but they are using only 4 diodes and the old Valentine One used 6 diodes.

I got an STi about a month ago and I love it. I chose it based on a couple things.

1. It does very well in testing done by Guys of Lidar, and has a great reputation on radardetectors.net. It had some very good results on POP tests specifically. It is one of the "big three" detectors with some of the best performance available today.
2. I don't live in an area where radar detectors are illegal, but who knows what the future brings. I like the idea of being stealth. Laws can change, or if PDs buy Spectre regardless of legality they will not have reason to hassle me.
3. It also comes with some of the extra accessories I would have had to buy on top of the other detectors anyway, like the hardwire kit, travel case, and regular smart cord for use in other vehicles. This helps justify the premium somewhat, although it does suck getting stuck with that useless external speaker.
4. I think it looks the best of the current detectors. The black magnesium case is really slick and the thing just feels solid. The V1 on the other hand looks like an 80s reject. Maybe Aesthetics are a dumb reason to pick one detector over another, but performance being about equal I just like the modern-ness of the STi.
5. I live in the city and didn't want to deal with the alleged falsing of the V1. The Bel and Escort detectors supposedly have better filtering.

I borrowed a friend's V1 this last week to compare and they performed very similar. I didn't really notice any increased falsing with the V1, they both go off a good deal around town. I did find that I love the automute feature on my Sti, it lowers the volume on falses right away. I didn't read the manual of the V1 so I'm not sure if it has a similar feature. When running them together they would alert at almost the same time. Sometimes one would alert a second before the other, but neither was consistently alerting first.

I really liked the arrows on the V1, but for everything else I preferred the STi. I am still running the V1 to see what else i can learn (my testing has been by no means thorough). I have no reservations recommending an STi to others, or a V1 for that matter. They are both great detectors and choosing is just personal preference and what works best for where you live.

I think i have decided to get a Bel RX-65. What do y'all think????

Check out the new passport 9500i. The gps capability to filter false alerts is great in big cities.

I got a 8500 X50 and like it so far. Wife uses it most of the time since she drives hwy a lot more. She did say almost half the time when it goes off, there's no cop to be seen. But there are times where it saw cop from miles away around the corner. It's probably sensitive enought that it pick up signal from all over. I'm almost looking for cop now to check how good it's work.

The suction cup well....sucks. The unit fell of and hit the dash, twice. Hope it can take the hit. I need to get better mounting like some of you here.

It's an awesome detector. If I didn't get the STi I was going to go with the RX-65.

There are big problems with the new Escort 9500i and the majority of people are returning them because of less range than the Valentine One and the 8500X50.

They are locking out signals from door openers and the 9500i is not alerting to cops that shoot radar in that area. Owners of the 9500i are also complaining that signals that they lock out are not staying locked out from the day before. They also say that their Sirius/XM radio is cutting out because of the 9500i and its GPS function.
