Type of Oil Do You Use?
My last few vehicles were BMWs where the dealer always changed the oil using BMW brand oil (probably relabelled). Since the RX-8 engine is a lot more higher revving than any BMW I've owned, I wonder what is the best oil to use for her?
Standard or Synthetic? Brand recommendation as well would be appreciated. Thanks. |
synthetic oil is the best for RX8
crap crap standard i miss typed sorry |
Shak, the manual says not to use it or rather they are not responsible if damage results from the use of synthetic oil as they have not tested it. Did the dealer suggest/recommend using synthetic?
|
A salesman at a local dealer said that Mazda uses a 5w-20 blend now. I have no idea where he got that information but I wish that I had asked.
|
That info is in the manual. Use 5-20 oil until the dealer gets the green light from Mazda to use synthetic oil.

I am using Quaker State 5W-30 dino. Changed every 2500 miles.

Please direct me to the page that says not to use synthetic or that Mazda is not responsible for damage if you use synthetic. My manual only says to use API certified oil, with an SL rating. It doesnt say not to use synthetic, nor does it say not to use conventional oil either. My warranty booklet says I must use fluids listed in my owners manual to maintain warranty coverage. It does not say I must use fluids listed on the internet, or told to me by someone's brother's, sister's cousin who is a Mazda mechanic who owns a rotary blah blah blah. There is a lot of that on the internet. I will go by what my manual/warranty booklet recommends, which is an API certifed oil, be it conventional or synthetic. |
Ohm not again.....
Dude - search the forum! |
Castrol GTX 5W20.
|
mobil 1 5w20 at the moment ,had royal purple 5w20 it in the last year but can't seem to find it in norther va...soi guess i'll just have to order it online.
|
I have my dealer change it. The dealer uses Chevron 5w-20 (non syn)
I use Castrol Syntec 5w-20 to add when needed (have added 1 1/2 quart with 6k + miles.) |
Castrol 5W-20 Syntec-Blend. Changing out four quarts and a K&N filter keeps it less then $17 an oil change. Can't afford the pure stuff.
|
exxon superflo 5w-20 here, and a mobil 1 filter. I'd use mobil 5w-20 but I can't find it anywhere.
|
Valvoline 5W20. Doesn't seem like too many people on the board are using it.

What brand of extractor did you get?
|
Ive never used anything but Mobil1 in the last 5 years, never had an engine wear issue with any car. Just put 0w-20 in today.
btw- i didnt have the oil filter wrench so i didnt change that yet, since the filter is up top and upside down, it shouldnt be a problem to change just the filter a few days later should it? i think it will spill .2 liters or so but i'll set a pan under the car. |
I use Royal Purple synthetic 5w20. Having no problems with oil consumption at all. Very pleased with it.

Slightly more oil was replaced using the extractor versus draining (about 4.75 versus 4.5 quarts) and the entire change took only 15 minutes! |
Count another person that uses Castrol GTX 5W-20. I used to put nothing but Mobil One in my old car, but until they authorize/recommend it's use in this car I will stick to the Castrol.
|
Royal Purple Racing 21. Been using it for 13,500 miles
|
I always use 5W20 oil as per the manual and my dealer, however I have found it rather difficult to obtain. Sometimes when I need to just add a quart 90% of gas stations I've gone to don't carry 5W20.
A few oil changes have also said they lack it, luckily I finally found a place by my house that does it :) And as for synthetic, I have been told by many sources not to use it, so I don't. |
Redline synthetic !
