Turning ON and Turning OFF the RX8
Hello Guys,
I bought a RX8 this week and I have a few questions on how to turn ON and OFF my RX8. I will tell you what I do and please let me know if that's right Turning ON (1) Turn the car ON and leave it for 5 seconds (2) Start the engine and rev it up to 3000 rpm and hold it at 3000rpm for 10 seconds and then drive. Turning OFF Rev it up to 3000 rpm and shut it down with my foot still on gas and the car at 3000rpm. Do I have to bring it to 0 rpm before I shut it down or should I shut it down when it is still on 3000 rpm. Please let me know the right technique. Thank You. |
where the hell do people get these ideas from....

If it's warm, then don't worry about shutting it down weird. I would advise you read the stickies.

Answers are in the first 9 posts in this thread: (https://www.rx8club.com/new-member-forum-197/new-potential-owners-start-here-202454/) Perhaps you missed it, even though it is a sticky at the very top of the primary subforum. In addition to startup and shut down each having their own clear sections, there are other items in that thread that will answer further questions you will find.
A) Turning it on and immediately reving it is bad. For any car. B) Letting your car warm up is good. For any car C) Turning an engine off brings the engine to 0 rpm. You can't bring an engine to 0 RPM without turning it off. This is true of any car. It's part of the definition. The RX-8 is a car. Not a mythical beast. |
Go ahead and slap whoever told you to do all that. Everything you ever wanted to know about the general operation of your vehicle is in this thread:

if your car is on latest PCM calibration, hardware works ok, tune up is up to date. then you do NOT need to do anything, even when you shut it off cold.
the most important part is the PCM calibration, it changes the way spark plug fires and fuel delivery at startup, then it's up to date tune up. I never do that 3K shut off bullshit, even when I shut my car off cold at 20 degrees out of the gargage. |

B) Letting your car warm up is good. For any car if not driving it, the most I will let it idle is about 2 minutes, after that I just shut it off. no point wasting gas and excessive idling is as bad as revving it for cold for no reason. C) Turning an engine off brings the engine to 0 rpm. You can't bring an engine to 0 RPM without turning it off. This is true of any car. It's part of the definition. The RX-8 is a car. I believe these people who ask this question are referring to a British fellow or something on youtube who pretty much states what the OP is asking.
What I gathered from this video is he's suggesting you manually simulate a 'choke' upon warm-up & the 3,000 rpm is because all generations of rx7's + other rotaries chokes' (whether manual or electronic) warm-up at approx 2,800 for 10-20 seconds. Which I believe it's also intended to warm up the cat converter. |
