It doesn't need twin turbos. Twin turbochargers in an application of this type are not feasible--the added piping and vacuum hoses would create such a mess for the same output as an efficient single turbocharger. Initially, twins were used to minimize lag--but technology has improved since 1993--so the benefits of a twin setup are negated--not to mention the cost associated with such a setup.

The twins on the RX-7 were terribly unreliable and overly complex. I can never figure out why people always want twins. I guess if one is good, two must be better?

Well back in the day--twins were supposed to minimize turbo lag down low--at least thats what all the technical jargon was from RX7/Supra/300ZX/3000GT brochures in '95 said. Nowadays they are redundant.

...By a vast majority, the "really fast" supra's, and FDs, etc, have all done a 'twin-to-single' turbo conversion.

That's sequential twins tho, not true twin turbo.

There are other ways to get good boost response and good total boost than slapping 2 pigmy sized turbos to an engine and making it overly complex. The stock turbos didn't spin all that freely and they were restrictive. More backpressure before the turbo means more boost that is needed to overcome it. A larger single turbo, a properly designed exhaust manifold and better bearings in the turbo would have given a single turbo that spooled up as fast as the stock twins, was more reliable, and produced less heat. All factors that hurt the reliability of that car. This also would have been cheaper to manufactur as well as service. Never send a child (or 2) to do a man's job. Creative marketing worked good back then. too bad many still believe it. The idea is actually sound in theory. the problem was the execution of it was bad.

the rx8 doesn't need a twinturbo. in an rx8 its really not feasible because the added piping and vacuum hoses would make such a mess for the same out put of a good single-turbo design. twins are mainly used in an effort to minimize turbo-lag, but this is old technology so the benefits are next to zero. then you factor in the extra cost of a twin turbo design. so, in all reality, a single turbo setup is better than a dual, especially on modern cars,

:D
A lot of the really fast Supras also have powerbands that start at 4000rpm (if not later), which isn't exactly conducive to a street driven daily driver. <shrug>

That's because they use beer keg sized turbos that are only efficient at high rpm's and boost levels. That has nothing to do with the fact that there is only one of them vs the stock two.

Well, I'm very happy with the sequential twins on my FD. It can accelerate quick (or spin the tires ) from low rpm's and still put out a respectable 300+ rwhp at 13 pounds.

Not to mention nobody is sure that the engine of this car can handle the extra hp that a 2nd turbo would give us. Essentially the current turbo in the Greddy kit is the 18G that Greddy uses on their twin turbo kit for the Nissan 350Z. There is a very large difference in price Nissan 350Z Greddy kit (Retail = $8,190, Street = $5,869) vs. RX8 Greddy kit (Retail $4,195, Street = $2930), not to mention the complexity of the system as stated above. Right now nobody is sure that this engine can even handle one turbo at 9 psi, let alone two. I'm sure with more research, and more installs things will change.

The TT setup in the RX7 was fine for daily driven use--but for big horsepower numbers a single is best--the problem is with a single you usually would sacrifice the quick spool up time (i.e. lag) of the sequentials. A single turbo also cleans up the wossness of vacuum hoses that are oh so problematic.

Higher Compression, Different Ports, Different Side SEaling (new design) to support new porting, new oil injection system, returnless fuel system, I could go on, but you should really just read.

i'd like to see a twin turbo rx8...not for power, but for spoolup since the side exhaust flows like butt stock.

but i'd like to see it setup more like the supras...nice and simple.

I'd prefer to see mazda's electric assist turbo than twins. The stock ports cant be THAT bad or we wouldnt see any kits at all..
