Trunk WEIGHT
I recently changed over to new 17" rims with Dunlop Wintersport M3's in preparation for the winter weather. In spite of the 50-50 weight distribution in this car, has anyone found it helpful to throw some extra weight into the trunk to assist with traction in snow? I have a couple 75 lb. dumbells in mind for this purpose.
Also, if adding weight is helpful, what might be an optimal amount so as not to adversely affect general handling, braking, steering, etc.? |
Trunk Weight
IMHO - In day to day driving of course you don't need or want the extra weight. However, when you do it need (eg. are stuck...) you will want it and it would certainly help. Kinda of a catch 22. I don't plan on keeping any extra weight in my car beyond a shovel and perhaps a bag of kitty litter or sand... Certainly not much over 50 lbs worth. Craig

Just a follow-up on the weight issue: I have found that a 1200 lb. chunk of plutonium is sufficiently dense and compact enough to fit nicely into the trunk and has really helped out with traction during the worst winter conditions....(JUST KIDDING) Actually, I have been pleasantly surprised by the handling of this car this winter with NO added weight in the trunk. My 75 lb. dumbells will find better use if I move them inside from the garage!

i usually put a 50-75lb bag of sand in the trunk... get a little better traction and if i get stuck i can just use the sand to get unstuck
