Transmittion Oil

I was wondering if anyone knew how to check the level of transmission fluid for a manual transmission? I might be blind, but I can't find the the dipstick anywhere...

dillsrotary 06-05-2009 08:57 AM

There isn't one

nycgps 06-05-2009 09:14 AM

I want to know which "manual transmission car" has a "dip stick" to check the "manual transmission's" oil level ... I really want to know.

Like dills said, there isn't one. want to know how? search :) or pm the right people ... *cough*

To answer the question directly, manual transmission cars use gear oil. Actually some use a thin motor oil case such as Hondas but that's another topic. The RX-8 manual transmission uses gear oil. It is something that only gets replaced every 75,000 or so miles but many do it earlier and some change it later. It has no level to check. If the level gets low, you have a leak!

Automatic transmissions use ATF (automatic transmission fluid). It's very different stuff. It's thinner, red, and doesn't smell NEARLY as bad as gear oil!

Now that we've got that out of the way, the funniest thing I find is that 2 threads were started and in both transmission was spelled wrong!

Answering the specific question, you check gear oil level by removing the filler plug and sticking your finger in to see if you feel oil. The link ndhoffma gave shows where everything is. Rear end oil gets checked the same way.

Sometimes, if the car isn't exactly level, oil will run out of the filler hole. That also means it's full, and you need to put the plug back quickly to minimize the mess.

We're all wrong.

The answer to his question should be : We have no answer for you

Yeah I can answer that for EVERYBODY. You guys know why ?

Cuz we have no idea what "Transmittion " oil is.

ndhoffma 06-05-2009 12:51 PM

its kinda like dofferental fluid

Nubo 06-05-2009 04:25 PM

Yep, your finger is the dipstick. Gotta check via the filler hole when the car is pefectly level, otherwise you will either think the case is low, and add oil in error -- Or you will think it is overfilled as oil comes pouring out.

In practical terms, tranny lube is not consumed. So no urgent need to check it. If you have a leak you will notice the smell. Though there are times when you might actually want to check, especially if you gave the car to some lube-shop monkeys and suddenly the tranny is making noise or something.

nycgps, what's gotten into your head? It's really swollen, eh?

Fine way to welcome someone to this forum with post count 2.

Damn. no wonder saturn is outa business now ! :yelrotflm

useless feature = increase cost for no reason = bankruptcy ? :)

expo1 06-06-2009 08:17 AM

My beater, a 2000 Saturn SL 5-speed doesn't have a dipstick for the trans. The Clutch however does have its own fluid reservoir.

Edit: " I was wrong, there is a car on the road with an MT dipstick "

tunerwannab 06-06-2009 09:20 AM

Expo lokk way down on th the tranny, most people can barely reach it, and if you've never pulled it its probably all black with dirt, I usually have marks on my arm for about 30 min aft checking one.

expo1 06-06-2009 09:43 AM

I stand corrected, its there but you can't reach it without removing something. Why go to the effort of making a dipstick you cannot reach? You can also run DEXRON III in it, strange.
