Transmission fluid help...comeon mazda
Hey everyone, please advise-
I called Mazda because I want to change the transmission fluid in my 6-speed. They asked if I wanted a flush or a drain and fill. I asked them how they flush the tranny and they said that they flush the whole system with automatic transmission fluid. Is this correct? Should they flush a manual trans with auto trans fluid? Also, they said a flush is $140 and a drain and fill is $70. That seems expensive, but i don't want to do it myself, can I trust Mazda, is the question. Also, does anyone know if they will have Redline MT90 synthetic or an equivalent at the dealer to use? Or would they only have natural trans oils? Thanks everyone |
It sounds like maybe the tech may have misunderstood or missed that you had a Manual tranny; but, that said, how many miles do you have on the car? Is the transmission fluid looking severely discolored or dirty?
|
Sounds like maybe just interested in replacing the fluid with the red-line stuff. I've ready many reports that it results in a significantly better shifting feel. I'm going to try it myself. Have never heard about flushing a manual transmission though.

you talked to an advisor that didnt know what they were saying. We have 1 of those. It's just a drain/fill. We do not carry and syn. oils at our dealer.

Where would you guys recommend going to get the tranny/diff fluids changed?
My mazda dealership is telling me they only use the mazda fluids, so no redline. |
My dealer has told me I can bring my own fluids and they will do the work.

Is the transmission fluid looking severely discolored or dirty? I have 12,500 miles on my 8. Some tend to believe the trans fluid should be changed out early in a cars life, due to the initial wear of the trans and such. I tend to agree with this assessment, therefore I will get it changed. Maybe I should bring the car somewhere else? Or just bring in synthetic transmission oil? So, there is no way to flush a manual trans? OK, the guy must have been confused when he said that. It is interesting though, becuas when he said that I replied: "I have a manual 6-speed, would you still use the automatic trans fluid to flush. He then said, umm... they would use whatever they need for the job. |

I had my 6MT changed because I was experiencing hard shifting from 1st to 2nd. The ticket says FP-NUMBER XY-75W90-QFEHP with a description of OIL-RR 807025. I'm not sure what this is, but my tech told me it was synthetic. Anyone know what these numbers are?

You might just want to change it yourself -- it's surprisingly easy :)
|
If you're doing it yourself, just make sure you get a piston-type fluid transfer pump (all the ones I've ever seen are red). It's worth the extra $$$ compared to the bulb-style siphon pumps.
the cheapo-pump I picked had a tube with an inner diameter of probably 1/16 in. I managed to get a half-quart of Differential gear oil through it in a little over an hour (i just have to learn some lessons the hard way, it would seem....) |

I think I'll go down and talk to my tech about it, he is pretty good at helping me with my 8.

I just picked up some Lucas 80/90 GL-5 transmission oil. (didn't have any redline) Does anyone know if this will be okay to replace the transmission oil with? The manual says GL-4 or GL-5 75W90. I'd like to make the 1-2 shift a little smoother.

OK, I'm a newbie to performance cars. I looked at howstuff works several times now and think I have a good understanding of how an MT and clutch work. Are all gears and shafts bathed in oil, or is it just where the shafts are supported?

Here's a thread to help: DIY: Transmission and Differential fluid replacement . You don't need to spend no money on no stinkin' pump.
