Transmission/differential oil

Been looking around on the forum and through the many threads know I definitely need 75W90 GL-4 gear oil for the flush. No mazda dealership around me sells it bottled its bulk only so I had to buy from a local parts store that gave me Lucas (Mazda said they use Quaker). Just want to make sure the oil will work properly. Its a full synthetic that's says GL4 GL5 like it has properties of both?? Is this safe for my 8?

9krpmrx8 09-11-2017 11:13 AM

Just use OEM fluid.

TheRedRotor 09-11-2017 11:18 AM

They wont sell it to me though because its only carried in bulk, is there anywhere else I can get oem?

NotAPreppie 09-11-2017 11:38 AM

I wouldn't trust anything that says GL-5 in the transmission.

I like Motocraft XT-M5-QS.

9krpmrx8 09-11-2017 11:46 AM

They won't sell it? Any dealer sells OEM fluid. It is all I have used in 155k+.

TheRedRotor 09-11-2017 11:48 AM

No I called 3 dealers and they said sorry we only carry in bulk try Canadian tire:ftw: i want to use oem but can't get my hands on it

9krpmrx8 09-11-2017 11:53 AM

That doesn't make sense it's an OEM part number sold by the quart.

Loki 09-11-2017 12:04 PM

If it's rated GL5, I wouldn't risk it. GL5 is an evolution of GL4, so it might meet GL4 because it meets GL5, which doesn't make it compatible with our transmissions. Look up any performance shop, they should be able to provide you with RedLine oil, or check Walmart for the Motorcraft oil mentioned above.

TheRedRotor 09-11-2017 12:05 PM

I didn't think it made sense either, Mazda Canada must want me to just get the service done there but I don't roll like that

TheRedRotor 09-11-2017 12:06 PM

Loki, thank you once I find a different oil I will return what I bought today.... I don't want to risk it with anything else but the redline oil is like $230 CAD a gallon on amazon

lol what? I get it at a local shop for around 80 bucks for 4 bottles (2 in the trans, 2 in the diff).

TheRedRotor 09-11-2017 12:13 PM

I know its so dumb I'm on the redline website right now it shows a gallon for $71.95 USD I gotta make a few phone calls and find out who carries it around me

TeamRX8 09-11-2017 01:23 PM

Just go to a Ford dealership, or call first, this is the only one I'll use now:

Motocraft XT-M5-QS

TheRedRotor 09-11-2017 01:27 PM

You recommend this over redline? I found local redline retailer for a fair price

TeamRX8 09-11-2017 01:47 PM

Yes, I didn't listen way back when someone first mentioned it any better than anyone else does now

but get whatever you want and just change it already, noobie + oil = way too much drama every time it comes up

TheRedRotor 09-11-2017 01:49 PM

Look man I'm no noob I'm a mechanic just tryna find the proper oil cuz there's 100 threads and everyone has a different opinion

dannobre 09-11-2017 02:13 PM

The Lucas will be fine. Any suitable oil is better then the worn out dirty stuff you had in there ;)

The Ford stuff Team recommends is good if you can get it...so is Redline

The only thing that seems to be an issue is Royal Purple in the transmission. For some reason that doesn't play well with the syncro's in the transmission

TheRedRotor 09-11-2017 02:16 PM

Thank you!! :icon_tup: :icon_tup:

What is OEM gear oil, even? Does Mazda have an OEM MTF? I know Honda and Toyota do, but never heard of a Mazda MTF.

I was at my local Mazda dealer the other day, and they said they get their oil from Petrol Canada. That includes engine oil, gear oil and some other stuff. Some of the stuff seems to be "over the counter" and they store them in big barrels in the shop, which is like what TheRedRotor said.

So right now, I have this Petrol Canada stuff, which can feel a little rough at times. I just bought 2 bottles of Motorcraft MTF, which I will use as soon as I get my crush washers(which had to be ordered).

A lot of Miata guys like the Motorcraft stuff as well.

Btw, how much do Motorcraft MTF cost in the States? A bottle of a quart is like CAN$36-ish from the local Ford dealer, and they gave me a student discount, so CAN$25 for me. A heck lot more expensive than most ATF, which averages at ~CAN$10 a bottle.

Not sure how close you are to Bolton but I got redline this morning from a shop in Bolton I never knew existed

Steve Dallas 09-12-2017 03:17 PM

If you want to use Redline, use MT-90 GL4 in the trans and 75W90 GL5 in the diff. Just be aware that MT-90 feels a bit notchy until it is up to temp, which means you should shift carefully until then.

TeamRX8 09-12-2017 03:28 PM

I get the best pricing on Motorcraft buying it by the case. Been a while, but seemed like it was under $15/qt and the dealership is not far away. RL MT90 is too notchy/hard on the synchros for me and not as convenient to purchase. So the cost is not important.

You need to specificaly buy Motorcraft XT-M5-QS. They have another MTF trans fluid. So I don't recommend using the MTF designation for this reason.

UnknownJinX 09-12-2017 04:01 PM

So they exist, hmm.

Do you have the part numbers, by any chance? Just want to check with my dealership out of curiosity. When I typed "Mazda Manual Transmission Fluid", I can't find any relevant results.

Yeah, I bought the XT-M5-QS. I was too lazy to type because I was on my phone, sorry.

I think the other Motorcraft gear oil is not synthetic. If you say synthetic gear oil/manual trans fluid at a Ford dealer, you will get the XT-M5-QS.
