This is where it is.
You probably have to remove the air box to make room.
Disconnect the harness
Unbolt the ESS (usually from below)
Clean it with Brake cleaner
Attach the connector.
Bolt it back in... this is tricky

200.mph 10-22-2010 10:11 PM

thanks brew u rock

The Reverend 10-22-2010 10:24 PM

Cleaned mine today and man...that thing was filthy!

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_7PDgZVjoRJo/TM...0242010065.jpg

I didn't realize it was an exposed sensor. Figured it was up inside somewhere. No wonder it gets so dirty! Cleaned it up with MAF cleaner, looks good as new.

And the result is???

York 10-24-2010 06:50 PM

Haven't drove it yet :dunno:
But I wasn't really having any _problems_, I thought the worst that could happen is my MPG gets a tad better :fingersx:

Brettus 10-24-2010 07:28 PM

a rag works ....

York 10-24-2010 09:28 PM

yea, and after looking at it it almost looked like you could clean it without removing it..but I didn't try it so I'm not sure.

RX8Soldier 11-07-2010 04:04 PM

Does it matter if I touch the sensor? Or, do just spray the bajeebus out of it and let air dry?

York 11-07-2010 08:50 PM

you can wipe it off.

Charles R. Hill 11-08-2010 08:50 AM

It is a magnetic inductive pickup and all you need to do is wipe the dirt off of it with a rag, as has been stated. Dirt is not as much of a problem as is the possibility of ferric metals attaching themselves to the sensor and causing erratic readings from the trigger wheel behind the pulleys. These erratic signals will cause ignition and fuel injector timing issues, which results in poor driveability.

learn something new every day...

After an engine replacement, (3) sets of coils including the BHR Ignition Kit, and going through 2 MAF sensors.....this was my issue.

It caused a lot of vibrations at idle which were very different from the normal "engine mount" issue.

Thanks Charles!

Charles do you recommend that this be done yearly or at a certain mile interval? I'm at 86,000 miles and I'm certain that mine has never been removed. Do you think it is possible to pull it out from the bottom of the car. I've always disconnected mine by reaching up from under the car. I think I could get a ratchet up there to loosen it. Stay tuned.

Charles R. Hill 02-02-2011 02:34 PM

I wipe my sensor off whenever I perform any kind of maintenence under the hood. It is simple, easy, quick, and prevents a lot of weird stuff happening. I don't even remove it from the engine to do so.

any tips on getting to the ESS. I have only pulled the plug on the ESS when i am pulling seafoam into my engine. Its a PIA to get to from above...unless I am making this harder than it should be.

If you need to remove then do it from below.... it's a bit tight in there (that's what she said...)
Reinstalling the bolt is easier with the wiring connector attached

If you remove the air box you can see it and maybe clean it from above...

L337fpc 02-04-2011 06:13 AM

good deal. I have never ever cleaned it...so it has 85,xxx mi of debris all over it then. I'll take some pics tomorrow, this should be interesting.

I will definitely add this to my tune up list as Charles does.

CANT get mine out ! http://i689.photobucket.com/albums/v...max/IMG206.jpg

I just wiped down my ESS (without removing it - as per Charles R. Hill).

Is it still necessary to preform the NVRAM reset?

If you are having issues with missfires that you think could be due to the ESS profile the reset is a good place to start. Try it a couple of times though if it doesn't work at first...seems to not take always on the first try

akatayama 07-16-2017 03:21 PM

After reading up on the ESS I considered doing a clean of it from the top (via removal of the airbox) when it occurred to me I can probably sneak a smartphone close enough to take a video without having to remove anything. Here's the video I captured - was pleasantly surprised it looked so clean, especially after reading some of the reports on these boards.

So here's the video I captured:

Though we cannot quite see its most important part, the part that actually faces the index wheel, we get awfully close and can almost see straight across its face, though not right at it.

Any thoughts? Given how it looks in the video would you say it's not likely to have an accumulation of ferrous material on its sensing face, or is this just wishful thinking on my part?

With many thanks in advance...

Brettus 07-16-2017 04:43 PM

just clean it already !

Diinj27 05-18-2020 01:23 AM

Bump

Just clean mine. Was super dirty
What a difference!!!!!
  1. greater throttle response and no more hesitation around 4k-6k.
  2. faster start up
  3. smoother idle and acceleration
