Time for oil change?

Hi all,
I just hit 1000 miles on my AT RX8... Time for me to get my first oil change right?
I was thinking about taking my RX8 to either Jiffy Lube or Speedy oil change..
What oil should I was use?? So is it every 6500 mile for the next oil change??
So do I just keep checking and adding oil untill the next oil change??

I didn't know anything about an oil change at 1,000 miles. The dealer sent me a reminder for 5,000, but nothing at 1,000. I think it uses 5W20, but no synthetic oils. You might take it to the dealer for the oil change, because there have been some posts about the quick change places not being familiar with the RX8 and not knowing how to do it. I think the manual recommends changing the oil every 5-7,000 miles depending on driving habits.

I would....

Personally I would (did) change it now, get the 'break-in' wear particles out.

^i agree nothign wrong with changing the oil at 1000...i did.

i also use synthetic...but i didn't right away (let the engine total break in first)

the dealershi puts rx-8's on either a 5k miles or 7.5k miles service plan based on your driving habits.

i do it every 2.5-3k miles myself.

Go ahead and change it at 1K and then I would recommend changing it along with the filter and drain plug gasket at 3K intervals. Do the oil change yourself. It's not difficult and there is an excellent step-by-step DIY in that section of the forum. If you don't care to do it yourself, take it back to the dealer for the oil changes. Do not take it to your local oil change place where they sometimes don't even know where the dipstick is located.

so it's every 7500miles or 6 month which ever come first? and i should be checking the engine oil every two fill-up right? Do I need to keep the engine oil to the top level?

With a car that has a rotary engine which seems so dependent upon the quality of the oil for longetivity, I would recommend changing it every 3000 miles. That's what my cycle is myself, first at 1000 to get all the metal shavings that come out over break in, then every 3000 miles thereafter. My local dealer recommends 3000 mile oil changes for all cars, but we do also drive just about 95% city driving, which is harder on the engine. And yes, I would strongly recommend changing it at the dealership.

It's a car. Do it yourself if you have ever done it on any other car before. Drain the oil, change the filter and add about 4 litres (or qts)....3.7 they say, and you're done.

Do it yourself! It's not that hard.

I changed mine at 1,000 (have 1,200 now). I religously change my oil 2,500 - 3,000 on ANY car I own. Always have, always will!

Oil change interval is more a religious than a technical question, and so you'll get many different answers. Following the doctrine of my particular "faith", I changed out at 1000 miles. 2nd change at 4000. I'll be doing the 3rd change this weekend, at about 8000 miles and will probably stick to every 4000 for now.

My "unorthodox church of the RX-8" allows synthetic oil and condones the use of 5w30. That's considered heretical in some circles

Don't worry about it too much. Following the owners' manual service intervals is just fine. Keep in mind that when Mobil1 came out, it was marketed as 1 year or 25,000 miles - whichever came first!!! Then consider that oils have gotten a lot better since the 70's!

If you're looking for a principle that holds among most oil-faiths, it would be to change the oil yourself. It's one way to make sure it's done right. More importantly, perhaps, it gives you a chance to visually inspect and familiarize yourself with the car.

If you really want to become an oil freak, try this site, arguably the "oil Vatican"...
