Throttle Body

Hey all,

I've got a somewhat rough idle in neutral and am going to clean my throttle body to see if that fixes it first before I go into the dealership to get the motor mounts checked out and possibly replaced. Is there anything specific I should use to clean it or should I just wipe it clean with a cloth?

Any advice would be appreciated. Forgive me if this has been posted before. I tried to search for a DIY but couldn't find one.

I've never heard of cleaning the TB doing any good, did you check for vac leaks?

i would suspect if the TB is nasty with carbon or something cleaning might help...i know my idle smoothed a little (maybe just placebo, but it was commented on) when i cleaned my MAF.

here's a thread about it https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...=throttle+body

There is a black, abradable material that is intentionally deposited in the throttle bore where the plate is aligned. This is there to ensure that there is a completely closed position for the TB.
Many people remove this with brake cleaner or something similar thinking it is a deposit of some sort.
Often this doesn't hurt anything, but occasionally it will upset the idle.
Removing this material definitely does not "fix" anything.

Well fuck me sideways - I didn't know that!

Its been mentioned before, but some of the "pros" around here blew it off.

You have to take apart a few new cars to realize it.

Thanks for that one.

I've read a few "rough idle" posts and there were suggestions here and there to clean the TB. My idle isn't even what I would consider "rough," although it does shake my shifter enough to lightly shake my hand when it's resting on it. I suppose I'll have the engine mounts checked out before anything else.

^ +1 just check the engine mounts first :)

A brand new 2011 will vibrate the shifter enough at idle to give your hand a slight massage. There probably isn't anything wrong with yours unless the idle speed is actually going up and down, hunting for a happy medium.
